I really want to believe this is a Photo Shop project, but I've been to West Virginia. Click to enlarge it and tell me what you think. Is this how he calls his dog?

I think I worked for this guy once.

I think "tandem axle" is supposed to mean one in front of the other.
I got my sermon done, the bulletin ready for printing, and my Foundations lesson 90% done. I also ordered the two sandwich boards and the banner we'll use to announce our presence. Either tonight or tomorrow I'll reserve our domain name, but I'll wait until we've got it before I say what it is. And it will take us some time to get a site up.I like my sermon. At least going in it feels effective. But I learned a long time ago that often no connection exists between pre-game projections and game day reality. And that works both ways - optimism and pessimism. Furthermore, the preacher's post-game evaluation has no necessary connection to what the Spirit decides to do with it in the lives of the listeners.
The other night I noted that one news service (CNN.com) reported that crude oil had hit a record $115 bbl. Another (USAToday.com) reported that after hitting $115 bbl the price dropped on news of reduced demand. I wondered if the two equally accurate headlines betrayed a conscious effort to cast the news in a particular light.
Tonight CNN.com has a headline that reads: "McCain releases taxes; not wife's." USAToday.com has, "McCain earnings trail Obama, Clinton." Read both articles and you'll learn that the McCain's file separately and that they signed a pre-nup when they married 16 years ago to keep her earnings as heir to a large beer distributorship separate. But again I wonder if the headlines, which carry a very different focus, indicate an editorial slant.
I didn't go for that motorcycle ride today. I did ride the bike over to the sign shop in Peoria but decided I'd do better to focus on church stuff. If I was riding I'd just be thinking about what I should be doing. So I got most of the work done and then played 9 holes. I haven't had time to hit a golf ball in almost two weeks so I was pleasantly surprised at my results. Mostly it was nice to be out in the warm (90 degree) sunshine.
And now I'm sitting here on our patio at 7:45, just after sunset. It's 78 degrees and perfectly clear. Which means that full moon is beautiful.
Even when I'm feeling jammed up there's sure lots to be thankful for!
And I'll take that bike ride tomorrow.
Speaking of bike rides, my sermon intro for Sunday includes stats on motorcycle accidents. I drew them from several sites on the internet, and as so often happens I ended up following links to some narratives about mc accidents. I did that this morning before I rode over to the sign shop. Boy! Did that make me extra cautious as I rode! 67% of car/motorcycle collisions occur at intersections. I paid very careful attention each time I crossed one.
Props to the Pope for addressing the priest abuse problem on four different occasions, including meeting with a group of victims.
Do you suppose the rate of abuse has been disproportionately high in the U.S.? I'm guessing we are not an anomaly, but that it has been under reported or covered up in other countries. Think about some European or Latin American countries where Roman Catholicism represents a much higher percentage of the religious population.
If I'm right the hierarchy of the Church must be holding its collective breath.
NASCAR is in Mexico this weekend running one of its two road course races. That means turning right. Expect crashes.
Have you read about Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the elected sheriff of our Maricopa County? He's rec'd some national news coverage, including a very critical article in the NY Times. I'm no fan of the Times but I gotta admit, Joe is an embarrassment. He plays to the media, seems intent on being as controversial as possible (see: playing to the media, above) and has a my way or the highway attitude. And while he may indeed be enforcing the law his public statements sure make it sound like he has a racially motivated agenda. I wonder if his officers are embarrassed to work for him. I would be.
I'm going to go inside and watch the last part of the Diamondback's game. These guys look like the real deal!
