"What luck for rulers that men do not think." - Adolph Hitler

I've had better.
The bike ride went well. I was on the road by 7 a.m. which was a little late but today was a speed ride so I was back in an hour and it was only 90 degrees by then.

The printer ran out of ink half way through doing the bulletins. Lost my internet connection in the middle of a whole set of outgoing emails. And Ilsa is acting up.

To finish the brakes I have to take the drums off. I started at the front left and got the bearing cap, lock nuts, keyed washer and outside bearing out, but the drum will NOT come off. I've twisted, beat and pried to no avail. Except now I can see the problem: the shoes are stuck to the drum. I've read that if the drums have been turned incorrectly it creates a ridge the shoes get hung up on. If that is the cause, or if it's not, I don't know the solution.

Classic VW transmissions have two drain plugs, fore and aft, and each has a small, strong magnet on the inside of the plug. The magnets catch metal filings as the gears wear so those filings don't further erode the gear teeth. Clever plan, but I was not encouraged by how well it has worked. Large glob of metal shavings on each plug. Hmmm.

I went into town this afternoon to do a simple plumbing job.
Except that's an oxymoron. The words simple and plumbing cannot be used in the same sentence, as was borne out by today's experience.
Note: do NOT buy a toilet and/or toilet innards made in China. Bizarre design programmed to fail and resistant to off-the-shelf replacement parts.

Preachers get up Sunday morning and sound smart. They know all this stuff about the text, the words used and their meaning, the historical setting....
Just so you know, they know all of that because they learned some/most/all of it during the week as they studied for that sermon.
The people are the best part, but studying and learning is a lot of fun, too. All the better because it's studying and learning about God's Word. I'd hate to spend the week studying some stupid math formula.

Tomorrow is a two hour ride with a forecasted overnight low of 81 and a high of 110. If I leave before 7:00 it will only be the upper 90's when I get back. Ah, life in the desert.

I had that same problem with the drum brakes on my 59 Chevy Truck. On older cars the shoes are a little narrower than the drums and if the drums are not turned often enough, then they can wear a channel into the drum. If the channel gets deep enough, they become almost impossible to get off. In the end I had to take a cutting torch to one of the drums cut it off. I wish you better luck!
