Half the people in that room would love to see the President hoisted on a yardarm, and even this afternoon were taking shots at him. But when he walks in to give the State of the Union address everyone is all smiles and loveliness. Nancy Pelosi, sitting directly behind the President, smiles warmly for the camera, but hours earlier referred to him as "poor baby."
No wonder Congress has an even lower approval rating than the President.
Speaking of the cozy world of politics, lots of developments on the campaign trail! Senator Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy endorsed Barak Obama today, a major diss of Hillary Clinton. She's got to be really ticked, and her husband furious. If I were setting odds, I'd give Obama 6 to 4 odds of being the democratic candidate.
McCain gets slightly better odds, maybe 7 to 3. Gulliani said today that the winner in Florida's primary tomorrow will win the nomination, thereby setting the stage for his withdrawal. He'll be lucky to get third, and that after weeks of ignoring the other primaries to campaign steadily in that state. Ooops. Huckabee will finish fourth and lose all the momentum he gained in Iowa. I really don't think it's because he's an evangelical. Rather, he said some things that make even evangelicals nervous. In discussing abortion he said that the Bible should not be changed to match the Constitution, but rather that the Constitution should be changed to fit the Bible. The Constitution may need changing, but not so as to bring it into alignment with the Bible. For those familiar with the movement, that's straightforward reconstructionism, theonomy. And for all the misuse of the phrase "separation of church and state", this view does seem to cross that line.
The real race on the Republican side is between McCain and Romney. Aside from the issues, one man comes across as firm in his views but not combative, antagonistic or strident. He has an almost gentle demeanor. The other seems to perpetually be in a bad mood and argumentative. I suspect that's because he feels a bit desperate, like he's losing ground daily. And given the amount of his own money he's poured into the effort I don't blame him for being in a foul mood.
Note: the above carefully avoids any statement about who should win their party's nomination! It only speculates on who will, and why. Now we'll wait to see if it plays out this way. But watching the developments is interesting.
We heard on the local news tonight that 1600 limousines will be in service for this Sunday's Super Bowl. Where are they all coming from?? There can't be that many limo's in Phoenix. Which got me to thinking; if I took off the logo and lettering, and maybe slapped some rims on Stealth Reliabity, do you suppose I could make a few bucks ferrying people from their hotels to the game?
I decided this morning that yesterday's sermon could have been done a lot better! Which is to say the preacher got fairly disgusted with himself. At this point the only solution is to set his jaw and determine to do a better job this coming Sunday.
Yeah, I know.
I'm delivering and installing the wheelchair ramps tomorrow morning. I took measurements on site and built them in our garage. We'll see how well I did at getting that right.
Maine is the only state whose name has just one syllable.
In comic strips, the person on the left always speaks first.
The Spanish word for "wife" is esposa. The plural is esposas, which means "wives", but also means "handcuffs."
I don't make 'em up, I just report 'em.
