Follow the Bouncing Ball

I went for a bike ride out to Bartlett Dam/Lake this afternoon. The last 10 miles wind through a canyon that was really beautiful. I wanted to stop and take pics as I went but there wasn't any shoulder and the road went side-to-side and up-and-down so much that I didn't dare stop. So I took some pics when I got to the dam. This saguaro cactus is probably 20' tall.

OK, if you can't laugh at yourself something is seriously wrong:

Yesterday Clinton and Obama both unveiled their program to address the mortgage crisis. Clinton wants $30 billion to go to states so they can buy foreclosed houses and businesses and another $10 billion so states can restructure "unworkable mortgages." She also wants a 5-year freeze on mortgage rates. Obama's plan lacks details but he's called for $30 billion in new money for enforcement and to aid borrowers who can't pay their mortgages.
McCain has proposed no money to assist people with mortgage payments they can't make. He said this week that banks forgot the #1 rule of lending: never loan money to people who can't pay it back. He wants market forces to sort the whole mess out, with borrowers and lenders paying the price where bad loans were made.
I'm not going to take a position here (although I have one). But this does seem to illustrate the key difference between the view of Democrats vs. Republicans on many issues. Is it government's role to fix problems or to ensure that a free market system is preserved so as to solve these problems?
This same difference in perspective applies to other issues, like health care and energy.

Do you have problems with pigeons, aka flying rats? Maybe this guy can help:

I'm sitting here on the back patio listening to coyote pups trying out their howls. It's dark and has been for about an hour, but the temp is still 78 (sorry, Bonnie). Pam's working and I just had dinner with Mrs. Swanson. BBQ-flavored boneless ribs. In other words, fake ribs with fake flavor. But hey, it took 7 minutes to fix.
Now it's time to go inside and watch Dateline. Did you see it? Any thoughts/reactions?

We watched the whole two hours. Aside from the cheesy presentation and the rhetorical questions, it was a very interesting and moving treatment of the story. Since our family has Taylor connections, I clearly remember the accident and the subsequent mistaken identity. Learning at the end that this was probably a promo to a book, I felt a little "taken," but I'm not sorry we watched it. Thanks for the tip.
