Random and barely coherent thoughts

Another cool pic. This one is a stitched image of the earth at night. Click on the image to see it full size, and note the key in the lower left.

If, to paraphrase Yogi Berra, 90% of golf is 80% mental, Sunday evenings are not the ideal time for a preacher to play 9 holes. The good news is that the half-round improved as it progressed. And trust me, there was lots of room for improvement.

Are the "Catholics Come Home" ads playing where you live? They're on TV very frequently here, and they have three or four in the series. My favorite is the one that lists some of the achievements of the Catholic Church over the centuries, including putting together the Bible (really?), establishing schools and hospitals around the world, and establishing the scientific method. Every time I hear that last one I wonder what Galileo would think about it, having been thrown in jail by the church for suggesting that the evidence shows the earth revolves around the sun, not visa versa.

The Mormons are also trying to reclaim their sheep who have strayed. The new president of the Latter Day Saints gave an address yesterday to the church at their bi-annual meetings in Salt Lake City. He called on lapsed Mormon's to come back to the fold.
I'm thinking lapsed Mormons probably weren't listening to him. You?

I rarely catch one of my favorite radio programs, "From the Top" on NPR. It's on every Sunday evening, at least on our NPR station, and I caught the tail end of this week's program on our way home from dinner at Applebees. It features young musicians, and by young we're talking mid-teens. The program features three young people each week, and they are usually instrumentalists, although I have heard vocalists. It's taped before an audience and the host interviews each of the kids in turn before they perform. It's fun listening to those conversations and overwhelming to listen to their talent and skill! This week featured three 13-year olds who, at then end of the program, played a trio. Incredible.

Tomorrow I begin phase 2 of the flooring job I started last month. Phase 1 was to put down vinyl flooring in a new 10' x 20' room addition off this lady's double wide. Tomorrow I rip up the existing flooring in the front half of the mobile home, prep and, if all goes well, go back Tuesday to put down vinyl in it's place. That involves two 12' wide rolls, each about 30' long. Wrestling match. And one side of this space is a kitchen, which means lots of cut-outs. I'm going to use some painter's masking paper to make a pattern which I'll then transfer to the vinyl. The book said that was the way to do it in a situation like this. Here's hoping the author knew what he was talking about.

It's nice to have the work but I gotta admit, the day after a Sunday is not my first choice for a day's worth of physical labor.
So I think I'm going to turn in.
G'night.
