Last night I swalled my pillow. Today I'm feeling a little down in the mouth.
The pundits on ESPN agree that Terrel Owens is narcissistic. Wherever he goes he eventually creates turmoil because he needs to be the center of attention. So what do those pundits do? Give him more attention. Can we please stop feeding this psycho's ego?
OK, let's indulge that basest of all human instincts, schadenfreude:
Bad Day
Some really great news stories come out of Michigan. Like this story of a heart found on the floor of a car wash in Paw Paw. They don't know if it's human or animal.
Then there's the Detroit saga. All three plants announced today that their normal holiday factory shut-downs will be extended. It saves production costs and reduces a bloated inventory. Dealers report that they are losing 25% of all sales because buyers can't qualify under the current tighter financing standards. And Chrysler announced today that they will continue their sponsorship agreements in NASCAR for the next season.
Odd combination of things, don't you think? They're running out of cash, they have too many cars and one quarter of their customers can't qualify, but they're going to pump the usual millions into "go fast, turn left." Hey, if it were my money, I'd spend it in NASCAR.
Wait a minute. It is my money.
Or it will be my money when (not if) the govt. gives it to them. But I am curious about Pres. Bush's delay in announcing the plan he said he would present. Almost two weeks after the Senate Republicans blocked Congress' plan, the President still hasn't presented the program he said would be forthcoming. That delay is the more remarkable because he knew before the Senate vote what would go down in that vote. In other words, despite the fact the White House could see what was coming before it arrived we still have no word on what the President will do. He did, however, make a trip overseas to play dodge shoe with Iraqi journalists. Not the kind of thing you do if you see a domestic issue as extremely pressing.
Hey, what do I know? But I suspect this delay is intentional. The President has all the expertise available to come up with a program in days, never mind weeks. So if he hasn't presented that plan the delay must be intentional. And Congress knows it, which is why Nancy Pelosi said today that they are ready to quickly approve any measure the White House presents - hint, hint.
Once the new Democratic administration is in place later next month there will be a plan. That plan will certainly benefit the unions that refused to accept a reduced pay & benefits package as demanded by Senate Republicans. So is Pres. Bush delaying as long as possible to gain some kind of leverage? Bring pressure to bear? Push them to the brink?
In my next life I'll be an investigative journalist. Move over, Woodward & Bernstein.
