Today's plumbing job at a condo in Scottsdale
This is what it looked like before I started. The hot water valve, on the left, is the one that leaked. You can see the lines for another faucet on the back side. There's a bathroom over there, too.
Here's the completed setup:
I was ready to cut out the old faucet at 10:00 but the water didn't get shut off as promised. [These used to be apartments, which is why there's a single shut-off for the entire complex.] After a half dozen phone calls I learned that the on-site maintenance man forgot he was supposed to take care of that. By the time he was located and had the water off it was 11:00, but I was promised a full two hours nonetheless.
The good news? As a result of this delay I learned that it was an on-site maintenance guy, not someone who stops by. I saw him out mowing the grass and stopped to talk to him. His name is Pedro and even through his limited English it was clear to me he was a nice, cheerful guy.
I stopped to talk to him because I wanted a special dispensation. We exchanged cell phone numbers and he agreed to turn the water back on when I called him to say I was ready. And then he'd stand by the valve and shut it back off if I called to say, "Leak."
At 11:45 I called to tell him I was ready, Pedro turned the water on, and at 11:50 I called to say, "LEAK!"
Because I replaced a two-handle system with a single handle system the new manifold is a little more than an inch narrower. See that bend in the two plastic (PEX) lines? I started out with the lines running at an angle, and as a result they didn't seat squarely. Turns out they need to seat squarely. So Pedro shut the water off, I heated and bent the PEX with my torch, Pedro turned the water on and I called him back to say "NO LEAK!!"
OK, that took two brief sentences to describe but an hour, a trip to a Home Depot 5 miles away, and a good deal of stress (!) to accomplish. I bought right angle Shark Bite fittings just in case, but also learned that with care I could use a torch to heat and bend the PEX. The latter obviously worked.
I looked at my watch right after the "No Leak" call to Pedro and it was exactly 1:00!
Look, I don't care if the guys in lab coats with pocket protectors, or the skeptics drinking soy lattes at Starbucks buy it or not. But I am fully and completely convinced that God answers prayer and helps his children in the daily challenges of life. James says, "The fervent prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." Today I made up in fervency anything I lack in righteousness.
Because God answered prayer today it is incumbent upon me to praise him for "NO LEAK!" at 1:00. In the Black church you can hear the question, "Who'll give a witness?"
I'll give a witness; I'll testify!
T'ank you, Fadder!
Sunday in Foundations we're going to look at Hebrew poetry. It occurs in almost every OT book, and five of them are written almost exclusively in this literary form. Which means it's really too bad that the vast majority of Christians don't understand how Hebrew poetry works. It really is a pretty simple system, and once you see it, it's an "aha" moment. You'll never read in Psalms or Proverbs the same way again.
Wanna come? We'd love to have you!
I don't know if I am more hungry or tired. I'm going to start with dinner and bed won't follow far off!
