What happens when a blonde gets Alzheimers?

It's just shy of 11:30 p.m. and I just got back from an 800-mile round trip to San Marcos, CA, just this side of San Diego. We are now the owners of this 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. It's a longer story than I have the wherewithal to write tonight. I've consumed enough Diet Coke and Sun Chips to give me a belly ache to last for days. And I'm sleepy! So for now, the Cliff's Notes version:

I've been surfing Samba.com for a few months learning about what's available and what prices run. (if you're interested, look at the classifieds page and go from there) I've looked at a couple of local Bugs advertised on the site but they were too rough and too much money given the work they'd take. This one showed up a couple of weeks ago and looked too good to be true, especially at the asking price which was well below the rough Beetles I'd looked at.
I made a couple of phone calls to the gal who owns this and scheduled a trip to see it for today. Based on our conversations I speculated that she a) didn't know what she had, b) has too much money and doesn't value things realistically and c) seemed pretty ready to part with it for reasons I'm not sure of. But she also said she was firm on her price. Knowing it was priced very low. She bought it four years ago, drove it for about 6 months and then parked it because she replaced it with a Porsche Cayenne (SUV).

I contacted the pres. of the local classic VW club and asked him to look at the ad. He said that without seeing it in person he thought it was priced at 2/3rds of what he would expect it to be listed at.

I've learned enough from my research to feel comfortable inspecting one of these. I know where to look for rust issues, signs of body repair, parts often missing or damaged, the typical mechanical issues, etc. So when I got to San Marcos I went through it pretty thoroughly. It has some minor problems but aside from a couple of electrical issues to be traced out the only problems are insignificant and cosmetic. It drove very well - tight engine, good tranny & clutch, and solid steering. Brakes good, too.

I'm Scottish, thus very hesitant to spend money. I had three separate phone conversations with Pam as I looked at it and she was perhaps more inclined to move on it than I was. I felt very ambivalent. So I told Pam I was going to practice some bad theology and put out a fleece. I offered her $500 less than her asking price, a significant percentage of that amount. She went inside to talk to her husband. When she came out she said she was pretty sure that if she held out she could get her asking price, but she also wanted it to go to someone who appreciated it. So she'd sell it to my for my offered amount.

OK, to put it bluntly, I stole this. I'll do some work on it, clean it up with some elbow grease and order a few parts to replace those that are missing. We bought it to drive it but I'm pretty sure I could double my money. I'll keep you posted on the project and post a few more pics once it's actually here. Tomorrow I have to figure out how I'm going to get it from San Marcos to Sun City. I don't want to drive it, so I'll either have it shipped (I started getting estimates before I left) or drive a rental truck and trailer and bring it back myself.

Before I head to bed (my eyelids are already half closed)...
Where are crows going? The fly across the sky like they're headed someplace, not like other birds that seem to move from tree to wire to bush.

LOVE the color! Looks like you will have a lot of fun with the new project.

On another note....I know I am a few weeks late but could I get a copy of your 52 must know verses?

I think that your crows are all coming up here.

Fix/restore, drive, enjoy. Resist Scottish tendancies to turn a buck. Sell if you
"need" the cash. Your quality of work and the limited miles you will put on it will increase its value each year. Sell it now - purchase price plus "X". Sell it ten years from now, purchase price plus "X" times "?" CYB
