"Getting caught is the mother of invention." - Robt. Byrne
Sorry about no post last night. Long day. I couldn't set up for services on Saturday afternoon like I usually do because they had a rehearsal going on. So I was there early yesterday morning to do that.
Karen Fosse, a friend I grew up with in Seattle was in town from Pennsylvania for her son's wedding, and came to Pathway. She joined us for lunch and then we spent the afternoon hanging out and catching up. Hadn't seen each other in 17 years. She looks the same (not fair). By the time we'd been to Pollo Loco for supper, Karen headed back to her lodging and we got back to the house it was 8 p.m. and I still had work to do. Each Sunday evening I edit the mp3 of the morning's message, write a few sentences about it and email both to the outfit that manages our web site so they can upload it to our "Messages" page. That takes an hour or so, including wait time while the editing software does its work filtering, amplifying and converting the audio file. When I realized I was dozing off during those stretches I knew it was too late to write a coherent post.
We're in the midst of an unseasonable stretch of "warm" weather. Temps today were 10 degrees above normal for today's date. That means that when I went for my bike ride earlier this afternoon it was 96 degrees with 6% humidity. It really is a dry heat. Tomorrow we're supposed to be in triple digits.
Yesterday afternoon I had phone conversations with Cheryl and Carrie of Arizona Adopt a Greyhound. Last night, just before I passed into unconsciousness, Pam and I looked at pictures and descriptions of the three dogs Carrie recommended as options and settled on "Al." How do you say no to a dog named Al? He's a 4-year old male who slowed down, something that happens to Greyhounds at about that age. (Just writing that makes me feel so much better about myself.)
Al weighs in at 78 pounds and is white with a few large brindle spots.
We go to get Al Friday night at 6:00. We've been told to expect him to cry most of the night. He's been living at the kennel since retirement last December so suddenly being away from familiar surroundings, other dogs and the handlers will probably stress him out. Some Greyhounds go through separation anxiety, and they have specific suggestions on helping them adjust.
Assuming Al is OK by the end of the day Saturday I'll post some pics. He is a beautiful dog.
I've always liked traditional gospel. I recommend that "channel" on Pandora.com.
I'm listening to Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers as I type.
BTW, Sam Cooke is a fascinating character. Or was. Shot dead in a seedy hotel lobby after an encounter with a prostitute.
We had a visitor at church yesterday, a lady who came as a result of our ad in the newspaper. I cannot express how much I've been praying that God will bless our outreach efforts. If he labeled me a pest I wouldn't argue. But today I'm giving thanks for answered prayer.
Not that I plan to stop pestering on this one.
The other special blessing in yesterday's service was the opportunity to thank God as a congregation for answered prayer re. the twins. John & Nichole brought them up during the worship service, just as they had a month ago when we asked God as a church to so direct that they would be appointed as permanent foster parents for the girls. That word came down late last week. The 2-year old cuties will eventually be adopted by John & Nichole, but their special medical needs are, for the time being, best met under the foster care system.
I mentioned that I might post a pic of the twins but I learned that because they're still in the foster care system their pictures aren't supposed to appear like that. So you'll just have to wait. Or, you could come to Pathway!
Who'll give a witness??!!
The rebuild kit for Gerta's carb came this afternoon, along with six fuel filters. I may get to that task tomorrow. Gotta get the girl going.
The price tag for every man, woman and child for what the U.S. govt. and the Federal Reserve have spent, lent or committed in new pledges so far this year:
$42,105.00.
So here's the plan: count up how many people live in your house, multiply the above figure by that number and send that amount to the federal government. We'll be in good shape as soon as we all do that.
This may be the most effective means of birth control the govt. has ever come up with.

I have ambitions of making significant progress on the curriculum tonight. I'll try to have something thought provoking for tomorrow evening's post.

You're right about Sam being a fascinating character, Pastor. But there was more to his demise than the "official story."
Sam wasn't shot under seedy circumstances, but rather died trying to hold onto the success he'd built. When he refused to give in to nefarious forces, he was killed and his name scandalized.
