This pic represents part of my day. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the speedometer in Gerta will suddenly start screaming with a very loud, very high-pitched noise, and at the same time the needle will bounce all over the place. So today I pulled the speedometer, disassembled it and lubed the worm gears with Vaseline. But after closer inspection I think the source of the problem is the end of the cable. It's supposed to be square but the corners are rounded off, perhaps just enough to slip erratically. So after I finished I ordered a new cable ($20) that will arrive Wednesday. This whole process took a little over an hour but I went about it very deliberately. The cable just threads on to the extension you can see in the lower left corner of the pic. But six separate spade connections hook to tiny light bulbs in the base. I labeled each with tape before removal so I couldn't mess up the re-install. And getting the unit back into that case was a little tricky.
That said, imagine removing, lubricating and reinstalling a speedometer in a modern vehicle, never mind in an hour. Not gonna happen. These really are easy cars to work on. And when the cable arrives it should take 30 minutes to install.
Three Navy Seals fire almost simultaneously from 75' away at three pirates. The snipers are bobbing up and down in rough seas on a ship while the pirates are bobbing up and down on an enclosed lifeboat 25 yards away. One of the pirates is behind a glass window.
Three shots, two dead pirates and one seriously wounded.
Remind me to never tick off the Navy!
Seriously, that is some awesome skill!
I had a good time last Sunday. Ask an honest preacher and he'll tell you that special services bring some sense of dread. People come to church expecting something out of the ordinary, a particularly powerful service and sermon. Heightened expectations often result in disappointment, a dynamic the preach knows well.
Nothing frees a pastor from that pressure like meeting in a dance studio and doing Christian karaoke. What makes it even better is remembering that worship, especially celebrating the resurrection, doesn't depend on two dozen Easter lilies, three choir numbers and a sermon for the ages.
So we did just that - we celebrated the resurrection and learned about the single point of emphasis in each of the resurrection narratives. If you're interested you can listen to the message here.
The people are the best part, but getting into the Word and learning life lessons from it is a lot of fun, too.
Tomorrow I'll spend time at a house nearby that has been empty for almost four years. I met the realtor there today to go over things. Both tub/shower faucets are frozen closed, neither toilet works properly and one of the bathroom sinks yields only a drizzle. This is one of those jobs that will either take a couple of hours or the better part of the day.
My folks celebrated 64 years of marriage today. That's a LOOONG time. It was a Friday the 13th the day they got married. Congratulations, Mom & Dad!
Mark Fidrych died today in an apparent accident on his farm. He was 54 years old. We watched "The Bird" pitch for the Tigers when we were in college and he was 22. He was a breath of fresh air in the dull world of MLB. Totally hyper. He went into his own little world on the mound, talking to the ball, getting down on all fours to fix slight irregularities on the mound, jumping up and down as he pumped himself up.... Not an act, just totally lost in the game. He was, by all accounts, a down-to-earth guy who married the sweetheart of his youth, was forced out of the game by injuries, but never complained. He went back home, bought a farm and drove dump trucks on the side.
Did you ever see Fidrych pitch?
I made good progress on the curriculum this morning. I have three or four weeks to get everything ready for production. The heat is on.
Part of the final stages of the project is editing, both for content and grammar/syntax.
Which is correct, recur or reoccur?
