Mexico - America's beard

It's prom time in Amish country.

Was there some kind of soccer match in Europe today?

Al is still adjusting. Tonight we played tug-o'-war with a stuffed dog toy, the first time he's been interested in that. Up until now if I grabbed it from him he just let go. Tonight it was play time!

The misc. jobs I had schedule for yesterday got pushed to today because of scheduling conflicts at that end. So I spent this morning doing a list of odd jobs at this home - installing shelves, patching walls, hanging a mirror, repairing tires on a stroller and anchoring a wheelchair ramp to the threshold. This couple has adopted seven girls - including 3-year old triplets - and care for another two kids through the foster program. The two have multiple serious issues. So this place could be described as controlled chaos. But in the three hours I was there I didn't hear any fighting or even arguing. Everybody seemed to be happy.
I'll go back in a few days after a part I've ordered for a swing arrives. I'll also put up more shelving and fix the sprinkler system.

I have a problem and need help. So if you have the answer, speak up!
Mark sent me a set of check disks last week and almost everything worked fine. A couple of files somehow didn't get loaded and we changed the way the disk boots (changed it to auto-load) but everything else was OK...including the PDF files.
I got a second set of check disks today and all of the problems with the first set are now fixed. But when I try to open any of the PDF files on the disks I get a screen full of code, not the docs.
Relevant information:
  • I downloaded the latest version of Acrobat Reader but that made no difference.
  • Re-booting, that mainstay of working with a PC, also didn't help.
  • I can open PDF files located on my hard drive - in some cases the same doc - with no problem.
  • The disks work just fine in Pam's computer; the PDF's open as they should.
All of that leads me to think the problem has to be with my disk drive. But why will that drive open Word docs, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations off the disks and then give me nothing but code with any PDF doc? One of those docs is a 3-page set of line drawings (maps) scanned and saved in PDF format, so it's not just PDF text docs.
OK, computer wizards, help me out here! I need to be ready to demo these disks at the convention in a month and a screen of gobbledy-gook isn't going to impress anyone!
Oh, and any solution cannot involve the expenditure of funds.

GM is expected to file for Chapter 11 protection on Monday. That means another $20 to 50 billion in funds from the govt. The American people will now own the single largest stake in the company. But at least we know the President will fire GM execs he doesn't think are doing their job correctly. 'cause that's why we elected him, right?

Things that used to give Americans a sense of security:
  1. Company pensions, including lifetime healthcare
  2. Tenure for teachers & profs
  3. An adequately funded Social Security system
  4. Secure borders
Pensions are a thing of the past and many retirees that had them have since lost them. They now go without health insurance. These days fortunate employees have a 401k, and the really lucky ones have an employer who kicks in a matching 2 or 3%. Tenure is going the way of T-Rex. Everyone knows Social Security will be hopelessly beyond viability within a decade. And 9/11 showed us we are not secure.

The last 2 years have demonstrated that no matter how much money you have, or where you have it, your nest egg can crack. Secure employment is an oxymoron and we're all one serious health problem away from poverty.

Has this sunk into the American psyche or are people still living in denial? If we have come to grips with this new reality how would it show? What would be the evidence of a new perspective?
