It may be time to redefine success.

The MLS championship game was played over the weekend and Salt Lake City won. I didn’t know Salt Lake City had a team.
OK, let’s be honest, I didn’t even know the MLS championship game was being played. I don’t get soccer. I also don’t get their team names. The MLS champions are now Real Salt Lake City, and that’s pronounced “ree-AL” (they don’t even pronounce their words in English). That mimics European team names, like Real Madrid.
What the heck is a ree-AL?

This afternoon I went to the pool and swam 600m, but did no running or riding today. And that swim was my last workout before Thursday morning's race. I confess to being a lot more anxious than eager about the event, probably in large part because last year was such a bad experience. I am wishing I had trained harder, i.e. had a higher level of fitness, and I have no confidence about the swim portion. My workouts at the end of last week didn't go especially well, which also messes with my head.

We were talking about that at lunch yesterday and the kids gave me some grief about my diet. Apparently large cinnamon rolls buried under frosting and Burger King combo meals shouldn't be major elements of a training table. According to them I should be eating more complex carbohydrates and protein. Broccoli and cauliflower were mentioned in particular. (seriously??) One of them said that as a general rule, "if it's white you shouldn't eat it," as in white bread, white rice and the like.
So I've dropped the cinnamon rolls (mostly because I finished them). And I'm committed to staying away from white foods. Which is why I'm having brownies from the pan for dessert.

The President says he "will not rest" until there are more jobs. What does that mean? He won't go to bed at night? He won't take any time off? He won't quit?

A few nights ago I wrote about some Gu energy gel I have with a "best if used by" date of 2006. The bag of Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips I'm eating from (they're not white, either) says, "Best By 02-07-10". Wow! On Monday the 8th they turn rancid?

Because of the Thanksgiving recess and Christmas recess health care legislation won't pass this year. But will it pass in 2010? After Saturday night's vote I'm less confident we'll escape without a government health care system. I know that some of the moderate Democrats say they only voted "yes" Saturday night so that the Senate bill could progress to floor debate, but that bill currently contains things they say they can't accept. How do they reconcile a vote to debate something they object to on principle?
I guess I don't understand the give and take of politics.

My next project is making cabinet doors and drawer fronts for our kitchen. What we have now looks like it's 40 years old. (duh!) I made a mock-up of a door today to see if my design works. It does, but I need to do things a little differently - location of the screws, router bit size, etc.
The doors will have a 2" wide frame with a bead board center panel. The larger drawers will be the same and the smaller drawers just a plain front. I'll also update the hardware. The whole thing will get painted a semi-gloss pure white instead of the flat off-white they are now. (Dirty, too.)
I like making sawdust.

I think we also discussed only eating things that were grown, picked or killed. I don't think 'killing a pan of brownies' counts.

I've seen Josh kill a pan of brownies before it even knew it was being hunted. I think he may have even burned his hands eating them straight from the oven.

grown, picked or killed? Doesn't that include just about everything we eat? Like he says, the brownies aren't white AND they're made with wheat (grown and "picked"), eggs (early death) and water (or milk - chocolate milk). Yeah, I think the brownies qualify under a training diet. As for veggies - brussel sprouts and cabbage will provide propulsion during the marathon.
