"Say goodbye to your friends and get in the car."Favorite quote of the day:
“When you sue your boss it ain’t gonna turn out well.” - Kent Hance, Chancellor at Texas Tech Univ. re. ex-coach Mike Leach.
Maybe you saw the news that Pastor Rick Warren has posted a letter to his congregation on the Saddleback Church website asking for special donations to help wipe out a year-end shortfall of $900,000. My immediate response as I read the article on the MSNBC site was to thank God for the people at Pathway Bible Church who give faithfully and generously. Because of their faithfulness we are able to do some things both inside and outside of Pathway for the advancement of God’s work and the care of his people. Even in tough economic times we face no budget crisis. I am blessed to pastor a church of faithful givers.
The local news here continues to amaze me. We didn’t get these kinds of stories once a decade in Grand Rapids.
They found another body today, this time in one of the big irrigation canals that run through the city. It’s possible this is an accidental drowning, but... “c’mon, man!”
A 78-year old man was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition today with his arm almost completely severed at the shoulder. He caught it in a pole auger machine! What in the world is a 78-year old man doing wrestling with a power pole auger?! Those things are brutal!
But wait! There’s more!
A Phoenix man dug a 3’ deep fire pit in his backyard and was roasting a pig for a New Year’s Eve block party. He fell into the pit and was burned to death before his family could get him out.
Wayne Newton, Las Vegas institution and perpetual pre-pubescent crooner is 68 years old.
He has a 7-year old daughter.
One more example of violating the Law of Discretion: Not everything that can be done should be done.
I got the dado corners squared on all the frames except for the two I have to re-make. This morning I ordered 28 European hinges. Tomorrow I’ll start cutting the bead board inserts. The wood shop is closed until Monday so I’ll have to wait until then to cut the replacement frames.
Steve & Michelle got back today from their holiday visit to Michigan. Josh and Aubri leave tomorrow for a weekend trip to San Diego. So tonight everybody is coming over for “take it home and bake it” pizza from Costco. Pam baked cookies for dessert. We may play a game, but probably just hang out and visit.
BTW, only a guy who REALLY loves his family would go to Costco on New Year’s Eve.
I spent several hours this morning in the books working on Sunday’s sermon. We’re beginning a series in 1 Timothy that I’m looking forward to. But this first one....
Sports that involve a variable route - mountain biking, skiing, white water kayaking - will sometimes refer to a particular course as “technical.” By that they mean that it requires concentration and skills to complete successfully.
Some sermons are like that. The passage requires careful exegesis in order to get to the meaning and then some wrestling to discover its import for 21st century living.
The first 11 verses of 1 Timothy 1 make for a technical sermon.
Go Navy!
Well, Happy New Year. More specifically, may we have, by God’s grace, a year of blessing and growth. Some of us may not be here a year from now. But if we know Christ as our Savior that’s a good thing, at least for the departed. If we do make it through 2010 we can be sure it will bring difficult times; that’s the nature of life on this side of the river. That, too, can be a good thing if it leads us to greater dependence on God’s strength.
See you next year!
