We just got back from dinner at the Palisades, the church's gift to my mom. Words can't describe this place...but I'll try anyway. It sits on the water just above a marina with some very expensive yachts. Across the bay is the Seattle skyline, which at night is stunning. (We had a table by the window.) The restaurant is something akin to casual elegance and the stream with steelhead (?) running through it adds a unique touch. The food is beyond incredible and it's one of those places where the presentation is just as fancy. I had a salmon bisque for the first course and I don't think it had any more than about 10,000 calories. Think cream, butter, maybe some milk and salmon. My main course was crab cakes with steamed vegetables and greens. Dessert was a banana/ice cream concoction that included candied walnuts and enough rum to make it too good.I'll need to eat again in a week, maybe two.
It rained most of the day so I didn't get any run in. I need to run tomorrow for my conscience if nothing else.
The Republicans are, of course, correct that a double standard is being applied. Sen. Reid would be banished to the wilderness for what he said were he not a Democrat. That's one of the benefits of being the party in power. If the situation were reversed and a Republican had said something similar with their party holding both houses and the White House the outcome would be the same. And the Democrats would be screaming foul. Welcome to politics.
Tomorrow afternoon the five of us - my parents, my two brothers and I - are sitting down to discuss their future. This is a very big house that requires climbing 14 stairs to get from the front entry to the main floor. The large back yard is 20 or so steps below the entry. Because of its size and because it's 35 years old the place needs constant attention, never mind the normal household chores. At 87 my parents are not, shall we say, ideally suited to be living here.
There comes a point when roles reverse, when the children take on the care of their parents. That transition is difficult. And it's tough to give up hearth, home and independence, especially when no place will have the view they have out the back side of their home. But we have to seriously consider the risk of a catastrophic event, most likely involving the stairs, if they stay in this home much longer.
In a conversation a few weeks ago with a friend who knows my folks' situation he said, "There are some problems only the Lord can solve." Tomorrow afternoon we'll need God's wisdom and help as we try to sort through the options and come to some agreement about the best for my parents' future.
I need to get to bed, but here's a short clip that I've watched several times and still don't think I understand:
Crazy Nuts Illusion

The nuts are made out of paper and have missing sides. That's why the pencil can go through both holes without changing direction or moving anything. Or am I missing something?
