I got the old cabinet doors off, the holes puttied & sanded and the face frames painted. The floor is vacuumed and mopped. I hope to get the new hinges put on and the doors installed Monday. We have friends visiting from Michigan who arrive Friday and I hope to get drawer fronts made, painted and installed before then. (Pam won't want to hear that. She doesn't like it when I push things. So don't tell her.)
The cable network Starz premiered their big new show, Sparticus, Friday night. They're pushing this as a spectacle show, full of grand scenes, sex and violence, and throwing big bucks into ads in all the major publications. My favorite line from the 2-page spread in last week's TIME:
"The legendary rebel survived death in the arena to become a slave and a gladiator."
Exactly how does someone survive death?
And isn't there an editor somewhere who's paid to catch things like this?
According to the NY Times the majority of union members now work for the govt. With the auto and other manufacturing industries shrinking there are now 7.4 million union workers in the private sector, compared to 7.9 million unionized government workers. Something about people working for the govt. (that is, you and me) seems inconsistent with unionization. Maybe that's because I remember that air traffic control fiasco.
Did you watch the Haiti fund raiser on TV? We didn't. Barrett-Jackson was a lot more interesting. I'm extremely skeptical when celebrities raise money for the cause du jour. In addition to wondering how much of their own cash they've thrown into the pot I question whose expertise will administer the funds raised. In this case, Haiti has a thoroughly dysfunctional central govt. The abuses of the Duvalier regimes are, thankfully, a thing of the past. But there's a reason Haiti has, even under a new, democratically elected govt., remained the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Throwing money into the country may be less effective than helping build the governmental infrastructure. A case could be made that they could get too much money, making things worse instead of better. But hey, if Madonna and Clooney say more of my money is the answer, who am I to argue?
Sometimes no amount of planning and preparation is enough. I came home from today's longer run with both my socks, but if our house had been another 50 yards away there would have been serious problems!
Is there a way that both the Saints and the Vikings can lose? Please?
A couple more tasks before Pam gets home. See you tomorrow night.
