When the door won't clear the toilet....This time of year we look for the cooler-than-normal days and double digit temps. Sometimes we get the opposite, and today was one of those with a high of 110. But with only 11 Saturdays left before the Tour de Tucson I can't slack off of my weekly long ride. So today I did 42 miles, a bump of 10 miles over last week's. If I keep up that rate of increase I'll be in good shape by the middle of November, including a couple of recovery weeks with lower mileage.
I tried something different today. Usually I stop for a break at the turn-around point and eat my sandwich. Today I ate it a little bit at a time as I rode and only stopped long enough to refill my water bottles. I didn't notice any negative effects and I think it may be a better approach. My legs always tighten up even with a 5-10 minute break, and eating as I ride obviously helps with the total elapsed time.
Yes, after I get back I'm tired for the rest of the day. A month from now doing 42 miles will seem like no big deal, but at this point it pushes me. The bigger problem is all the food I eat when I get home. I had my lunch at 11:00 and my dinner at 2:30. We're looking at a MAJOR supper tonight.

Yesterday was a long day, hence no post. I played some (bad) golf and then did the bulletin. After lunch Pam and I drove to IKEA down in Tempe. We decided on the pieces we want for our new living room and came home with an Ektorp chair. We'll get the rest over time as the budget allows. I'll still scout Craig's List for options.
We got home in time for my fantasy league online draft. I think I got a pretty good team, including Phillip Rivers as my QB, Larry Fitzgerald as one of my WRs and Beanie Wells as one of my RBs. (Go Arizona!) Then a phone conversation with my folks and my older brother. Dad is having some health problems and we're concerned that he's getting the necessary medical attention.
I spent most of the ride this morning preaching my sermon to the pavement. We'll see if it does any good tomorrow. And in Foundations our discussion will include a look at Stephen Hawking's latest contribution to our collective wisdom. (Gravity?? Seriously?!)
I don't know what possesses a guy to try this. Maybe a bit too much to drink?
Crazy Farmer!
The sun is down and the temp down to 103. I'm going to go load up the car with the sound equipment for tomorrow.
