We went out for dinner tonight to a new place up the road that opened a couple of weeks ago. The Crazy Italian, or The Lunatic Italian, or something like that. Good food, small portions, a la carte and over priced. I wonder how long they'll be in business. We learned our lesson.
Some interesting links for tonight:
THE definitive Beethoven site. Seriously. If it has anything to do with Ludwig it's here, including audio files of everything he ever wrote, all kinds of historical docs, and on and on and on.
Here's a site that's a survey of classical music, a great way to learn more if you're new to the genre.
San Fransisco Symphony - Keeping Score
Here's a brief video of how Wilson footballs are made. They supply all the footballs for the NFL.
Last week, for my lesson on the second commandment, I ended up doing some reading on Eastern Orthodox sites re. their view of salvation. They reject the "Western heresy" of juridicial salvation (their term for substitutionary atonement) and hold to a view in which Satan was tricked into killing an innocent Jesus.
That has me wondering what they do with passages like 1 Peter 2:24 and Isaiah 53:5-6 and the dozens of other passages that tell us Christ bore the penalty for our sins. It makes me want to sit down with a priest from a Greek Orthodox Church and ask how they do that.
The answer, of course, is that church dogma takes priority over Scripture.
This week, in preparation for my sermon on what we believe about Christ (obviously a major piece of overview) I've been doing some reading on Mormon sites about their view of Christ. Not surprisingly, their view draws support from the Book of Mormon. Citations from the Bible are few and far between.
It reminds me again how important it is to know the Bible, and why we're a Bible church. We started this sermon series with what we believe about Scripture precisely because it's the source of everything else. Deviation from the Bible's teaching is a serious matter with real consequences.
How many hymns and/or gospel songs can you name that are about Jesus? e.g., What a Friend We Have in Jesus. I found a good version of that one today, done by Paul Baloche.
Goin' to Barrett-Jackson tomorrow afternoon. Elder meeting tomorrow night, so I may not get a post in, but I'll have pictures of some pretty awesome cars when I do get back.
See you then.
