We got up this morning to RAIN. Not the typical OR coast drizzle, but real rain. I took down the tent and packed everything up while Pam was at the restroom. I hate doing that when things are wet but I didn't have a choice. We got everything in and headed down the coast. Didn't leave the rain behind for almost 5 hours, but it cleared up south of Eugene.
We got totally lost getting from Hwy 101 to Sunset Bay State Park. NO signs. Whassup wid dat?! Finally got pointed the right direction thanks to a helpful flagman at one of several road construction blockages. The tent is set up:
A nice site that, as you can see, backs right up to the woods. The C Loop is all tents, so no hookups anywhere in site. The bathrooms are only about 50 yards away and the water spigot is 30 yards away. So we're set!
Because everything was put away wet I took advantage of the SUN and WARM to lay everything out. While it dried we walked across the way to the bay. It's about a 1/4 mile walk and it happened to be low tide when we went. We spent about an hour or so exploring tide pools and just walking around.
This view doesn't do it justice but it's the best I got. The bay is probably about 1/4 mile across and very shallow, at least the part from the low tide mark in.
When we got back to the camp site we saw the crow. He had settled in on top of one of the pillows we left on the picnic table to dry out. And he pooped on the pillow. Fortunately, it was Pam's pillow so everything's OK.
By the time all the pieces were in place we headed into Coos Bay to pick up a few things and grab some dinner. Uhmm... Coos Bay is not the cultural/educational center of the Oregon Coast. We went into Walmart which had the effect of a double whammy. I asked about 5 different people, including a gas station attendant, if they had coffee houses with wi-fi and they all agreed there were none. So we ate at a "steak house" inside the Super 8 Motel and then headed over here to McDonalds for their free wi-fi.
Steve's rule is, "Never stay at a motel with a number in its name. That goes double if there's a "steak house" inside.
The ranger said it's supposed to be sunny through the weekend. Not warm - mid-60's - but sunny. And that works just fine. The cell phones don't. Too remote; no service. I didn't think there was anyplace like that left in the U.S.
Will Congress come to a deal on the debt ceiling? Will the world end if they don't? Do we believe what either side is saying? (I don't.) Is any media outlet giving this issue in-depth objective coverage? (I doubt it.)
OK, we gotta get back to the site before the sun goes down. And it's about 20 minutes south of here along a windy road. I'll be back tomorrow.
