"Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative." - Oscar Wilde
The State of CA has asked the Supreme Court to overturn AZ's SB-1070, this state's tough illegal immigration law. They complain that it drives illegal immigrants out of AZ and into CA.
Color me stooopid, but isn't that logic flawed? CA doesn't want them, but doesn't want AZ to do anything about getting them out of our state. Isn't there a third option here?
Magic Johnson moves from basketball to baseball as part of an investment group buying the Dodgers. When we lived in SoCal we were staunch Dodger fans, so I'm hoping the new ownership will resurrect the glory of the other storied MLB team.
We were at the eye dr. at 7:45 this morning, ready for Pam to have the surgery to reattach her retina. The people out front - the people who told her to come this morning for surgery - don't communicate well with the people in back, including the doctors. We were there almost three hours to spend 10 minutes or so with the dr. so he could confirm that she does, indeed, have a detached retina. Now she is scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. The dr. explained what they'll do - (shiver). Afterward she has to be face-down for the first 24 hours, will be "pretty uncomfortable" for the first 3-4 days, and off work for a week or so. The gas bubble they'll put in her eye will be there for 2-6 weeks. But the option is blindness in that eye, so it's a no-brainer.
I think I may have posted this link a year or two ago, but I came across it again today and thought it was worth revisiting - or visiting for more recent readers.
Solid Brass
I spent about an hour exploring the Rambler this afternoon. The original owner's manual was in the glove box, along with a little spiral notebook detailing everything he did to the car since buying it in 1972. And I mean everything. Date, mileage, and service performed.
He was concerned I would be disappointed when I saw the car, so I sent him an email yesterday letting him know the car arrived and that I was very happy with it. I asked him a couple of questions about some things that seem amiss and got answers tonight that are very reassuring. It seems very likely now that the transmission's tendency to slip out of gear is nothing more than a linkage out of adjustment. And I think I may have solved the carb leak.
I am blessed with what the King James Version calls "a helper meet for him." That's Olde English for a wife well suited, a good match.
There is NOTHING wrong with someone who likes fine dining, resort vacations, and luxury cars. I'm just not one of those people. The good news: neither is Pam. We're both very happy to go out for dinner to a modest place where the food goes on a tray and you fill your own drink cup (tonight it was Chipotle). Our ideal vacation is camping on the Oregon coast, and a cozy teardrop is going to feel like luxury after living in a tent for two weeks. We enjoy cars with character, personality, over digital bells and computerized whistles. Methinks most wives would scream "NO!" to a '66 Rambler American (their most basic model) that lacks power anything - including brakes, steering, and windows.
"It's fine if you want to drive it, but don't expect me to ride around the block in the thing!"
Instead, she's looking forward to tooling leisurely along the highway, throw-back teardrop in tow, or just taking it out for a drive on a Friday night.
T'ank you, Fadder.

That was awesome! Praying for Pam.
I was thinking yesterday when I read your post that you married the absolute perfect woman for you. I love that.
my brother-in-law had detached retina operation that didn't take the first time and had to be re-done. not really pleasant but as he had to say, listen to the doctor about the air bubble. hope all goes well.

That is an awesome video. How much BETTER would that job be if, after his work was done, he was permitted to parachute down?
