Provided your success is short-lived, I believe our friendship will survive.

Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, was arrested in May and charged with DUI. He was doing 10 mph in a 35 mph zone and stopping in the middle of the street. When arrested he had a metal suitcase in the car with over $29,000 and bags of prescription drugs that weren't in his name.

Donald Sterling, owner of the L.A. Clippers and a dirty old man in an extra-marital affair with a woman one third his age, was surreptitiously recorded making racist statements.

Within hours of the tape's release Sterling was banned from the NA, fined $2.5 million, and told he would have to sell the team. Jim Irsay has thus far received no discipline from the NFL.

This difference is less about the two leagues the men are involved with than it is about our culture's ethics and mores - what's bad and what warrants getting kicked off the island. I'm not saying the disparity is right or wrong, just interesting. The verbal expression of racial prejudice brings a penalty more swift and harsh than illegal activity involving DUI and drugs.

If the Washington Redskins is a racist name, why isn't the Chicago Blackhawks also wrong? Yes, the latter is a tribal name, but isn't it still exploiting a culture for the sake of sport?

108 today and triple digits for the foreseeable future. I think daytime highs in the double digits might not be back until October. Welcome to summer.

This picture represents a stupid amount of work. From the left, two rear wheel well covers (stacked), the radiator frame, hood, two fenders, and the passenger door. All the dents, gouges, and holes have been welded and/or filled, and then sanded smooth. Because I'm a complete newbie at body work I'm sure I spent longer on this than a pro would have. In most cases I had to apply several layers of filler and sand each before I got a level, smooth surface, when a pro would have gotten it right in one or two applications. But I'm determined to do the best job I can no matter how much time it takes.

Spencer said I'd spend about $1500 to $2000 on my paint job compared to the ~$20,000 if I had a shop do the work. And he assures me mine can look every bit as good. I now realize that the biggest part of that price difference is the labor cost for all the hand sanding involved. Still LOTS of that to do between layers of sealers, primers, color, and clear coat, each layer getting sanded with progressively finer grits. But I have more time than money and want the satisfaction of having done it myself.

Left to do: the tailgate (started), the bed (gets the welding done tomorrow morning), and the cab (come back from welding mid-week). But none of those parts needs as much work as these, and I'm getting better at this, so I'm hoping to be ready to spray sealer and fill coat in a week or so.

There's more in my head but my body is done.
Except for that part where I go out to the kitchen and get more to eat. Then bed.

Blackhawks is a name accepted by a tribe. Redskins is a derogatory name given by whites to describe N'Amwrican Induans. The former is accepted by the people it intends to describe, the latter is not.

Re: "…isn't it still exploiting a culture…?" In a word, "No." It's no more exploitive to use "Redskins" or "Blackhawks" than "Vikings" (or "Saxons," or "Scotties," or dozens of other team/school names.) Some "cultures" just need to choose a better path through life than perpetual victimhood. Either that, or I (as a Scot / Swede / Norwegian) could start whining because some people tell Swen & Ole jokes and some people refer to me as "English" or "white- eyes." I'm SO disrespected; I demand reparation! In fact, the English chased us Scots off of our land; I demand our land back!! Really? Nah; can't go there. Some people just need to get over themselves.
