"The only time a woman really succeeds in changing a man is when he's a baby." - Natalie Wood

Today was not an especially good day. Nothing that threatens life or health, just a series of setbacks and hassles.

  • I've painted smaller truck parts against the west side of the house and used a big piece of plywood or masking paper to shield the house, but a couple of times I apparently got sloppy. So this morning I went up to Home Depot, got a gallon of the color we'd used eight years ago (I saved a can lid) and painted corner-to-corner. It's now very obvious how much the color has faded in the AZ sun. Do I have to paint the rest of the house now???
  • I test-fit the fenders and fender liners. In the process I discovered a small area on each fender that didn't get painted well at all. The color is almost missing altogether. I don't know how I missed it except that it pointed down as the fenders sat on the saw horses and I just didn't look carefully. The problem: the clear coat over the top makes it very difficult to do spot repairs. Monday I'll take one of the fenders down to Spencer who taught the classes I took and see what he recommends. It's possible I may have to strip both fenders and repaint and re-clear.
  • A month ago I torqued down the lug nuts to spec, the first time I'd done that. Today I discovered that when thus torqued the rear wheels are locked up. Could NOT roll the chassis, and trust me, I tried. As soon as I loosened the lug nuts - no problem. So Monday I'll go back to AZ Axle to find out if I need spacers or....
  • Pam's dog peed on my bath mat, again. He goes through stretches when, if he doesn't get the attention from her he thinks he should, either b/c she's left or is just busy with projects, he goes into my bathroom and pees on my rug. This does not improve the meager bond between us.
We hit 87 today and are supposed to hit 90 on Tuesday. I'm not ready for this.

CrossFit gyms across the country all host the same event on Memorial Day that allows non-members to participate. (Or maybe it's just b/c I'm Josh's dad and he's important at CrossFit Fury.) The workout is called the Murph after a Navy Liutenant who was a CrossFitter and was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. The full Murph: run 1 mile, do 100 pull ups, 200 pushups, and 300 squats, then run 1 mile. You break up that center section as necessary, for example, doing 10 pull ups, 20 pushups and 30 squats ten times.

They also allow for a half-Murph that cuts all those units in (surprise) half. I did it two years ago but did "jump pull ups", which means I stood on about a 6" platform and sprung up with my legs as I pulled up with my arms. Felt like cheating.

I had medical issues last year and couldn't do it but my goal is to do it this Memorial Day and not cheat. To that end I've been working on increasing my pull up potential. I have a bar out in the garage, and for about three weeks I go out every hour and do a series. I started with three every hour and I've worked my way up to eight, and yesterday did 12 sets. At this point I switch to doing ladders - do one, wait one minute, do two, wait one minute, etc., up to 10.
So yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about myself. I'm a 64-year old geezer doing a bunch of pull ups every day.

Then I read this:
And he's 54.
