"We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid." - Benjamin Franklin
I spent most of the day working on the truck, trying to pace myself so I have good energy for tomorrow. Yesterday I got the headliner panel in so today I started putting the rubber molding that surrounds it in place. That is a difficult, frustrating job that everyone on the truck forum says is a PITA. They're right. I got it about 2/3 done and then had to give it up for the day. My arthritic hands couldn't take anymore, my psyche was exhausted, and I'd already put one scratch in the paint. Pics if/when it's done.
But the big news is that I took another stab at firing it up. Earlier in the week I opened up the carb and reset the float, and then there was that monster gas leak problem Thursday night. After confirming this morning that all leaks were fixed I hooked up the battery and with Pam at the iPad (yeah, that's her hand off to the right) fired it up.
Fire in the hole!!
But all is not as good as this clip makes it appear. Though it now runs longer than one second at a time it still leaks out both gaskets and - worse - runs faster and FASTER the longer I let it go.
I think that even with the float carefully set at spec it's too high, and that explains the leak as well as the increasing rpm. But I'm not filled with confidence on this one, so I'll open it up, lower the float some more, and put some sealant on the gaskets. After that....???
Brad & Lisa are going to be in church tomorrow! They are VIF from our church in Riverside, CA who now live in CO. They're traveling through with kids and grandkid on their way to Disneyland. It will be great to see them after what I think is close to decades. Really good people.
The people are the best part.
Tonight Pam chose "Is Your Dog a Genius?" on NatGeo. Her dog left the room in shame.
Josh & Aubri won't be in church tomorrow because they're in Dallas for the Crossfit Regionals competition. After several years as a competitor Josh is the coach for this year's team. Crossfit has changed the way they run this stage of the cycle, creating fewer, much bigger regions. So whereas they've typically moved on to the finals they probably won't this year. But so far, with about half of the events left to go they're doing very well.
A cup of coffee, some of the paleo banana bread Pam made yesterday, and an early bedtime. It's Saturday night.

Just a couple of arm chair mechanic thoughts...
- You should never have to use sealer on a carburetor gasket.
- Are the needle and seat clean and seating properly? A speck of dirt can cause them not to seal or shut off the gas flow into the bowl.
- I am assuming that after the engine revs higher it shuts off? Sounds like you might have a vacuum leak somewhere.
I agree, sealer should not be req'd, and I'll only use it if my gasket gets worn out from all this open/close routine. And only a very small amount so that none gets on the inside of the carb.
Needle and seat are new, part of the kit I got to rebuild the carb - which spent a couple of hours soaking in carb cleaner. So there shouldn't be any dirt.
I shut the engine off to prevent over-revving a brand new engine. And this carb is so simple it doesn't even have a step idle cam. Only one vacuum port and that is a solid line to the distributor.
I really do think the float level is the problem. It's at spec per the kit instructions but I'm going to move it another 1/8" and see what happens.
