"Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning." - Edwin Rommel

That quote up there makes pretty good marital advice.

We're in Seattle for my dad's 94th birthday tomorrow. The celebratory dinner out was tonight because my younger brother needs to be in Portland tomorrow morning.
After dinner we came back to Mark & Mimi's (where we're staying) for her most excellent chocolate cake and visiting.

Yesterday's visit with Mauri and Sherry was excellent. Lunch at The Babica Hen Cafe was good, too. My curiosity got the best of me so I asked our waiter about the name. The owner is eastern European and had a strong attachment to his grandmother, his babica. And he liked the imagery of a hen.

At a rest stop on the way up we saw a beautiful puppy. I asked the owners if it was a ____ and they said yes. Walking away I wondered if I'd asked using the right name.
Is it a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Burmese Mountain Dog? There is a Burma, and Bernese sounds like somebody's old aunt, but Wikipedia confirms it is indeed Bernese.
I also learned they'll top out at over 100 lbs. (this was a big 4-month old puppy!), have an extremely high rate of certain kinds of cancers, and a life span several years shorter than other large breeds. Too bad, because it sounds like they have a wonderful temperament.

Our GPS system has two options for a voice and we've chosen "Michelle," who has a much kinder, gentler tone. I don't remember the female name of the other voice but she was almost snarky.
The problem with Michelle, or rather with our early model Garmin, is that it always uses the shortest route, never considering that it might be the slowest. We've been directed down dirt roads instead of nice paved options based just on the mileage.
That's happened twice on the way up. Fortunately, I knew to ignore her, both on the leg from our house to Newberg and from our room in Tacoma last night to the Ballard Locks this morning.
(Yes, we went to the Locks. Don't judge.)
Who would go through downtown Seattle in the middle of the morning to get to Ballard?? Or at any time of day?!

Now it's past my bedtime and my mind is shutting down. I'm blissfully unaware of any national or international crises and I'm pretty sure the world will continue to spin anyway.
So goodnight.

The problem with Google Maps is that it often has you trying to turn left at a very busy intersection with no light. It drives me crazy (heh).

Have you looked in settings on your GPS. Ours is an older Garmin model and you can select shortest or quickest route
