"Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it." - Winston Churchill
Marta picked up Stella at 5 p.m. yesterday planning to have her for the weekend. According to my calculations Stella would come into heat Saturday but Marta's busy schedule made yesterday the best time for her to come get the goat.
A little after 9 p.m. I got a message from Marta saying she "could bring Stella back tomorrow."
Yep, it was already done.
Turns out our girl is a slut. Don't know how I feel about that. Marta said there was no hesitation on Stella's part, which I suppose is a good thing given that this was her first breeding. It portends well for the future.
So 150 days from now, Sunday July 1, Stella should give birth. That's about six weeks after Sundae gives birth. We're going to have a party featuring four little kids.
Breeders normally charge a fee for hosting these assignations. Friend Marta has agreed that she'll either take one of Sundae's kids or the meat of every fifth kid, her choice. Sundae is a full-blood registered Boer which is why Marta would want one of Sundae's and not any of Stella's offspring (unless it's for meat). Stella isn't registered.
So if Sundae has a nice doeling Marta will take it sometime after it's weaned. I hope it works out that way because I think it would be most advantageous for Marta who has been SO gracious and helpful.
I haven't the knowledge or wisdom to figure out who's right about the release of the infamous memo. Or if either side has the high ground here. What I am just smart enough to know is that the conflict represents how dysfunctional our government has become. And that this only drags it lower.
Boy, am I glad this earth is not my home!
The book proof arrived in today's mail.
Aaargh!
Amazon specifies margins of no less that 1/2" on all four sides of a page. Because I didn't want this to look like a children's book or like I was trying to pad its length I went with their 1/2". That's too small on three of the four sides but especially on the inside edge where it's bound. The book has to be fully open to easily read the inside edge of the line.
I increased all but the bottom margin to 3/4". The bottom is OK because there's a footer with the page number that raises the last line of the text.
Making that change increased the number of pages from 143 to 156 which threw several other things off. I had to redo the Table of Contents, adjust several places within the text (chapters and sections are always supposed to start on the right hand odd-numbered page), and correct some line endings.
But wait! There's more!
With the increase of 13 pages the cover's spine width changes from .32" to .35". That means Aly has to adjust that part of the project, too.
This is why I ordered and waited for a proof copy.
It's just that I really wanted to hit "Publish" this afternoon.
I do like the cover Aly created!
