"Be not simply good - be good for something." - Henry David Thoreau
Church this morning was good. We sang "It Is Well," a hymn that has a powerful story re. it's composition and speaks of God's immense sovereignty and goodness. God is in control of all things and does nothing but what is good for his children. For that reason we can say, whatever the circumstances, "It is well."
I could only sing about half of it. It got me thinking about dad and his total confidence in our heavenly Father's sovereign goodness. I think it's fair to say that if there's one thing dad was known for it was his commitment to that great truth.
Couldn't sing. Voice wouldn't work.
After lunch and a brief nap I went to work. Barn and coop are cleaned and have fresh straw down. Sally's new fuel line is all done. I was going to go for a run but just as I was changing it started to pour. It's 4 p.m. now so if it lets up I'll still go.
The featured headline: "The Building Blocks of Life Found on Mars."
That's like walking into an Ace Hardware store and proclaiming "The parts of a nuclear reactor found!"
C'mon, man.
There are more homeless people in Oregon than we've seen anywhere we've lived. After two and a half years I'm starting to think Oregonians take that as normal as traffic lights. It seems to be assumed by almost everyone including government and social leaders that our duty is to take care of them like we're supposed to stop for red lights. Meals, housing, nap time in Starbucks.....
On the way home from church we saw a guy holding a cardboard sign that said "Anything helps."
Two miles down the road we saw a guy with a sign that read "Some things help."
I SO wanted to next see a sign that said, "Seriously, money is what helps."
There's a goat story developing here but I'll wait until tomorrow's post when it's more fully developed and I can hopefully include a picture.
We're also getting a new rooster tomorrow. Pam asked what I thought we should name him and I suggested Tertius, a'la Rom. 16:22.
Alas, I had to explain it.
Other options include Charm and Good Luck.
I asked Pam for her suggestion and all she came up with was Heffner. OK.
