"Never accept a drink from a urologist." - Erma Bombeck

The last selfie he ever took.

It's 6:30 a.m. and I've been up for an hour. I'm shaved, showered, and ready for round two which begins at 8 a.m.
We began last night at 7 p.m. and went until 9:45 with a 15 minute break at the halfway point.
We were back here to the Campos' at 10:30 and after some fresh fruit (Mmmmmm!) I fell into bed.
It's going to take a fair bit of coffee to get me through this day. We start at 8:00, have a one-hour lunch break, and go until 5:00.
I'm preaching tomorrow.
And dying on Monday.

Yeah, it's work, but it's also a lot of fun. This group of 50-60 people are engaged learners, laughs easily, and is patient with the translation process. We made surprisingly good progress through the material and are on pace to finish it by this evening's close.

Because I have to go down for b'fast in a few minutes here are some random, rapid-fire observations.

  • Recife is an interesting place to go for a run. There's a nice path along the beach with distance markers painted very 200 meters and an exercise station every 400 meters.
  • It's also warm at 8 a.m. (80's) and HUMID.
  • Beach wear is often minimal. Age has no apparent affect on choice of attire. (It should, IMO)

  • Portuguese is impossible. You don't close your lips to make an "m" sound, you do this combination guttural/nasal thing that gringos just can't manage to pull off. An "r" makes an "h" sound. An "s" makes a "z" sound, a double "s" makes an "s" sound, but so also does a "รง".
  • I usually try to learn a few basic words and phrases in the language of the country I'm in but here I mostly give people a good reason to laugh at me. "Bom" means good, but because I can't manage the guttural "m" it sounds ridiculous. I can pull off obrigado (thank you) and de nada (you're welcome) but my Portuguese pretty much ends there.
  • Traffic is crazy!
  • Kombi's (VW busses) are everywhere. Hmmmm.
  • Their fresh fruit tastes AMAZING. Much sweeter than what we get, but then it hasn't spent 3 months on a boat.
  • Even in a city of about 3 million (Recife, or "hehcife") you can't drink the water. Weird.
There is SO much more, but I have to get down for b'fast. I'm gonna need the energy. Do NOT plan on a post tonight. Maybe tomorrow morning? If I'm alive??
