How does it turn?
Why do people live here?
We got in yesterday about noon. I'd reserved a sub-compact from Fox Rental for $7 a day. Yes, that is a screaming deal. Alas, they didn't have any "Nissan Versa or similar" in their lot so they gave me this for the same $7. It's a 2015 Silverado 4x4 with pretty much all the bells and whistles.
I can't say I'm a fan. It's difficult to drive because of its size and getting it into a parking space is a challenge. All those fancy features are distracting and most are unnecessary. Why do I need to know what the transmission temp is? In Fahrenheit or Celsius! And getting in and out is tricky. It's in between just stepping in and using those add-on steps. Yeah, I'll pass, but for $7 a day I also won't complain. I am a little concerned about Pam driving it after I go home Monday. She stays for another week.
I asked the guy at the rental counter how much it costs to rent a car during car week in January (the next time we'll come down) and he said about $60 a day. THAT is why Pam will fly and I'll drive.
Today was "Grandparents' Day" at The Goddard School where Emily attends. So we spent from 9 - 10:00 in her 3-year old class doing class activities That included singing, reading a story, and using stamps and stamp pads to make designs on butcher paper.
I was very pleasantly surprised that she snuggled into my lap during story time. I only see her a couple of times a year for a few days so that made Grandad pretty happy.
Emily is the tallest in her class but she's half Dutch so that's not a big surprise.
Emily can say the Lord's Prayer.
"My will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Not too far from the truth.
They had about four dozen stamps to choose from including animals, flowers, and household items.
I asked Emily, "What's this?"
"A shirt."
OK, I can see it. Two arms and a body with a nice design on the front.
I had lunch with Josh White, one of my former students who now pastors a church here in Phoenix. (Steve and Michelle attend there and Steve is subbing and preaching the sermon this Sunday so we'll get to hear him.)
We talked all over the world for a quickly passing 90 minutes. Excellent.
I came home and picked up Pam for a trip to the nearby outlet mall where we got her some new walking shoes. I think some people stared. They gave Pam a blood thinner three times while she was in the hospital so she's covered with bruises.
And you know what people think when they see that. Oh well.
In an hour we'll meet up with all the kids and grands for pizza. That's the normal Friday night routine for the two families, something that makes me very happy. My kids and the cousins are close, tight. And tonight we get to sit in on the fun. When they're together I mostly just listen to the banter that flies back and forth.
It's about time to head for pizza. I'll be back tomorrow. Unless I'm having too much fun with the family.
