"What I am looking for is a blessing not in disguise." - Jerome K. Jerome

USAToday.com had a banner headline today: "Ten months after Parkland - the day-by-day fight over guns in America."
You cannot tell me that headline and story doesn't betray an agenda. I might be convinced otherwise on a one year anniversary, but to run that story front and center at 10 months....
Even in Christmas week the news cycle isn't that slow.

I've heard and read that we are officially in a bear market. None of those reports defined what that means so I looked it up this morning. It seems there's no agreed-upon definition. According to some it's a market in which stock prices are falling. OK, that could be Thursday and Friday of any given week.
The Motley Fool says a bear market is one in which stock prices fall at least 20% over a two month period as investors sell stocks in fear that they will drop further, This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as other stock holders see prices declining and decide to do the same. It lasts until enough people think stocks are undervalued and begin to buy them in order to make a profit.
Lemmings.
Meanwhile, analysts seem to agree that the economy is quite strong in all the essential measurements: a low unemployment rate, rising wages, strong retail sales, strong consumer confidence....
As evidenced by the Fed raising interest rates to keep the economy from overheating

I need to bake. I made cardamom toast Sunday afternoon but it's nearly gone and there isn't any other dessert. What to bake? Cookies - snickerdoodles, peanut butter, overnight, sugar???
Probably tomorrow afternoon but maybe Friday. I don't go into the office on Fridays so Friday morning may be best.

I worked on my class slides this afternoon. We're in 2 Samuel and will talk about David's early years as king. That means his struggle with Ish-bosheth, his sin with Bathsheba, Absolom's rebellion....
One of the challenges is how much to talk about each of those powerful narratives. My goal in this class is to provide an overview that helps them see the whole and not go too far into the pieces. Forest, not trees. But these narratives have SO much to teach that it's hard to rush through them.

I met with Dave this morning and feel good about our discussion. I think I have a better idea of what I'm doing and what the next steps should be in each of the areas of my assigned areas of responsibility.

I stopped at Midgley's on the way home. They're the shop we got the wood stove from and who did the install. I'd taken cell phone pics of the leaking and the discolored ceiling tiles and showed them to Derrin. I'm not sure what his role is at Midgley's but he's fairly high up the ladder. I can tell that by the way he directs others.
Whatever his strengths, Derris is NOT good at customer relations. If I were on that side of the counter and a customer who had spent $5,000 came in and said, "I have a leak that has obviously soaked the ceiling insulation and discolored the ceiling tiles" I'd make sure he knew how distressed I was to hear this news. And that I was very concerned to get everything made right.
Derrin...nope. Almost ill-tempered.
"OK, go over to her (nods "her" direction) and she'll set up an appointment."
Five minutes later "her", who spoke so softly and weakly that I could barely understand her, said someone will be here January 7 between 8 and 10 a.m.

I need to find out if there's a Mr. Midgley. Let's hope it's not Derrin.
