Don't think of yourself as a homely person. Think of yourself as a beautiful monkey.

Had a good ride this morning. No speed, but a good pull up the hill and back with a decent breeze to make some legs of the route challenging. Low 70's when I left, Car Talk in the ear buds, and not much traffic.

This is a crossroads election that will determine the future of our country. The stakes are high, maybe as high as they've been since....the last election.
Every four years we hear the same dire warnings about the irrevocable damage to our nation if the other guy wins. Yet here we are.

On the Today Show this morning they did a segment on a particular form of breast cancer that is very aggressive, can be clearly identified by a genetic marker that significantly increases risk, and is especially common among Black women. Some of the women in one of the families they profiled, after losing several members to the disease, had opted for preventative mastectomies.

I found the segment especially evocative. Their grief over lost mothers and sisters was obvious, as was their concern about their own future. But especially moving was the anxiety of a mother, a survivor, about her teenage daughter's outlook. The girl was there, too, and she had a smile that lit up the place. She talked about her determination to face whatever happened to her with the same courage she'd seen in her relatives.

Maybe one of the reasons I was moved by the piece is because an important family friend, someone I've known all my life, had a double mastectomy a few days ago after a diagnosis of stage four breast cancer. She has a difficult road ahead of her with chemotherapy beginning as soon as possible.
Praying for you, L.
