"Never wear anything that panics the cat." - P.J. O'Rourke
Somebody on Facebook posted a link to an article about the cells from in utero male babies migrating via the blood supply to the mother's brain and protecting her from Alzheimer's later in life. Her comment above the link: "Don't know if this is true, but it's interesting."
What?????
I wanted to respond with a link to an article that says BACON, if consumed in adequate quantities, will prevent balding and religious wars. Nonsense, but as long as I put that caveat over the top of the link it's all good.
We got over an inch of rain today, and our creek is higher and faster.
Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump. Did we need another reason to run far, far away?
Much of my efforts today were spent working on getting from Elmira OR to Mbeya, Tanzania in two months. Whew! Thankfully, a friend who is a travel agent in Grand Rapids is helping me out. Part of the challenge is coordinating travel with another pastor from Ohio with whom I'll be team teaching. We want to arrive in Dar es Salaam at the same time (he's traveling with his wife via Qatar), at least on the same day, so we'll have the same flight from Dar to Mbeya, on the other side of the country.
Turns out I will likely fly from Portland to Amsterdam, and from Amsterdam to Dar. That first leg has to be a two day flight! I didn't realize commercial airplanes could refuel mid-air.
Have I mentioned how much I don't enjoy sitting on an airplane? From Phoenix to Detroit felt like an eternity.
One month from today (2/19) I fly from Portland to Puerto Rico for eight days of teaching. Between the two trips I have a TON of prep to get done.
If you're a car guy you know the name Wayne Carini. His show, Chasing Classic Cars is a favorite at our house. (Yes, Pam too.) I read today that both his parents, who were in their 90's, died within 10 days of each other last month.
I got a call from our insurance agent. The underwriter sent her a letter saying that Allstate won't renew our homeowner's policy because the "back porch balusters" are too far apart.
Seriously?
So in the next day or two I'll tack up some 2x2's, take a picture and, according to our agent, have the problem solved.
We sure wouldn't want anyone to slip, fly between those rails, and fall 32" to their death.
(BTW, I'm pretty sure they mean the horizontal rails, not the vertical balusters.)

All decks that are higher than 30" above the ground must have a guardrail. Code requires guardrails to be at least 36" in height (measured from the deck surface to the top of the rail) and the interior sections of the rail (whether vertical balusters or horizontal rails) requires that any openings are small enough to prevent a 4” diameter sphere to pass through. There are other codes (pressure strength of spindles and rails, stairs, etc.) but these are the primary ones that we used when building our deck.
