"To be or not to be; that's not really a question." - Jean-Luc Goddard
We've found Oregonians to be almost universally friendly and helpful. They are not, however, imaginative. When it came to names for their cities and towns their motto was, "All the good ones are taken," so they plagiarized. Albany, Salem, Portland, Kansas City (yep), Phoenix, Dallas, Ontario....
I talked to Connie this morning, the wife of the timber guy who will cut down our trees. She said his current job is going on longer than he thought, and that after it's done - two or three more days - he's got one small job to do before he comes here. She thinks he'll probably start work here 8/8, or a week and a half from now. I can live with that; mostly it's nice to know it's on the horizon. She said he'll call me to give me specific dates for his meeting here with the Forestry Dept. rep and the start date in the next couple of days.
I did a longer run yesterday than I've done in about 10 years. It was only 3 miles, but a combination of that new distance and the mid-80's heat was not kind on my body. Still feeling it today, so there was no run.
I went to the hardware store this morning and got the supplies to run power out to Barnette. That involves some ditch digging in the gravel, but because I already had the wire, the most expensive part, this project will only cost me $35. And it will be a big improvement. Lights and power.
Started work on the install this afternoon and got the line from the breaker box run (conduit) and most of the wiring in Barnette done. Tomorrow morning I should get the connections at either end done and have POWER and LIGHT.
Pam will do the weekly grocery shopping the the a.m. and be back from town in time for us to head for the coast before the mid-90's heat settles in. It's an hour to Florence, and from there we'll head 15 minutes north up the coast to Heceta and the cool lighthouse there, (I hope to learn how to pronounce that name), and then a few miles more to Cape Perpetua to see the sea caldron from the path along the cliff. A stop for dinner on our way back through Florence and home by dark and cooler temps.
I don't know what we'll do Friday when the forecast calls for more of the same.
By Saturday we're back into the 80's, which here in the shad of our giant trees isn't bad at all.
Today I read on an online news magazine that one of last night's DNC speakers "threw some shade" to Trump. Huh??
So I looked it up and learned that expression originated in the Black and Latino drag culture. If you openly slam someone that's a read. If you do it with extreme cleverness, a particularly creative, witty comment, or even a very powerful stink-eye, that's throwing shade.
Throwing shade at Trump just seems like such a waste of effort, of creativity.
