"To attract men I wear a perfume called 'New Car Scent.'" - Rita Rudner
The Scandia Run was our morning, and as a result the afternoon was the MoHo Sit.
Pam did fine walking the 5k (3.1 miles) and was NOT, as she feared would happen, the last one to finish. She was exhausted, even though she walks further on a daily basis here, in large part because the flat course was on open country roads with the sun beating down. I don't know what the temp was at the start, but we hit 96 today, so it wasn't cool.
This pic is before the start. She wasn't looking so fresh at the end and made it clear I was not to take her picture then.
My goal was to run the 5k in under 30 minutes, and maybe place in the top three in my age group. I finished in 28:14 and got second, with a nice Scandia Run hat as my reward. It didn't go without a hitch, however. At about the 2-mile point my right calf tightened way up and I had to walk about 10 yards in hopes of loosening it. After another half mile it cramped up again, I walked a bit again, and then determined to just gut it out.
I've had this problem for 30 years or so, always the right calf, and always mid-exercise. Twice, while playing racket ball at GBC, and two or three times while running. I have no idea what the cause is but it's pretty severe when it cramps and leaves me hobbled for several days. I've been icing it and will take Ibuprofen before bed.
I don't know what my age group's winner's time was, but if it was close I'm going to be ... ticked! What time could I have had minus the two walking stints and with the planned brisk acceleration approaching the finish? Grrrr.
There's a very big track (as opposed to wheels) back hoe and a medium size bulldozer outside and just based on the effect they've already had I'm not going to like the final result. It's necessary, and our determination to call this an "unfortunate opportunity" persists, but gone is the feeling of living in the woods, at least from the perspective off the front porch. Sad.
I should have matching "after" pics to go with those I took last week for Tuesday night's post.
