"Man is what he reads." - Joseph Brodsky
Note: I'm writing this post throughout the day, instead of my usual evening composition. I'm doing that in part to track my thoughts as the day progresses and the news shows digest the outcome.
So, at 6:45 a.m. it occurs to me that one of the first things on Pres. Trump's agenda will be the nomination of a Supreme Court justice. With the Republicans retaining control of the Senate (as well as the House) confirmation should follow. Yes, I expect the Dems to make a lot of noise, but in the end the majority *should* confirm, assuming he follows through by choosing someone from the list he announced a month ago.
This may be our first measure of the new President's readiness to follow through on his promises. And, from my perspective, it's the opportunity to begin the process of protecting the unborn.
Unrelated: Because in the past we've made reservations online we're on the Oregon State Parks email list. I got one from them late yesterday about a one-time alteration to their normal policy of allowing reservations nine months ahead of the stay date. They'll open reservations for a spot at any site across the north of the state for the dates of 8/17-21/2017 at 12:01 Thursday of next week. Why? Because the total eclipse of the sun will happen on Monday, 8/21, and they're expecting extremely high demand. This policy applies to all state parks in the zone of totality and 30 miles on either side of that band.
We talked about it and decided to book a site at Champoeg State Park, just a couple of miles outside the zone. Our VIF's Mauri and Sherry live in nearby Newberg, so we'll go to church with them on Sunday and then watch the eclipse the next morning from our campsite. We've stayed at that campground several times before and it's nice.
I read some articles about the eclipse last night and learned that many of the motels through the zone of totality in central and eastern Oregon have been sold out for two years or more. Tourism companies reserved all the rooms, jacked up the price up to $100 each, and have filled them up already. Some motels are charging for parking spots in their lots for people who want to park their RV's there. Apparently people will come from all over the country to see this event within the zone as it travels across the country.
If you've followed my plans, I was scheduled to go to Brazil the last few days of Feb and the first several of March for my next teaching trip. That's been postponed until March. The local pastors want to do a better reprint of my book in Portuguese, unhappy with the quality of the first edition, so they can have it for outsiders who may attend the conference meetings. Like the other trips, this one will include two parts: teaching my book to a Bible conference that will be publicized fairly broadly, and a pastors' conference for the local leaders the Joe Campos works with. The latter will seek to give them skills for their ministries, but the specific topics haven't been determined yet.
I don't have exact dates yet, but will let you know when I do.
Of all the reasons Hillary lost the election I seriously doubt the glass ceiling was a significant element. Maybe I'm naive, but I think that as a nation we're largely over that. Had she been a woman of character, and had her personal history and her agenda been more populous I think her sex would have been irrelevant.
I got the truck's gas gauge fixed. Adding a grounding wire did the trick. Why it worked before is a mystery I'll let go. The bad news: I need gas. The good news: I know to make the gas station my first stop the next trip out.
With yesterday's outing to the feed store with the truck we now have straw down inside the goat shed. We're officially ready for those bottle babies, except for getting the replacement milk. We'll wait to learn what Marta recommends.
We're officially in the rainy season, as indicated by the presence of banana slugs on the sides of MoHo. This guy is about 6" long and was hanging out by the back door. Pam loves it when she has to come face to face with them.
One of the great ironies of the election results is the demonstrations in several major U.S. cities, where broad minded, people who accept those with different views in a spirit of tolerance and understanding are protesting in the streets and shutting down freeways.
Go figure.

It's interesting that we humans have learned more significant things about our universe from a total eclipse than almost any other natural phenomenon. Yet, so many will not connect the dot from that event to its intentional placement there for our benefit.
