"He conquers who endures." - Persius
That quote up there is true, but also hard. It's true whether the perseverance is in a battle with one's adversary or in a battle with oneself. I tell myself that all the time when I'm running, usually when I'm coming back up the hill. "Just keep going." Sometimes it's "Just make it to that mailbox," and when I get there it's, "OK, now to that telephone pole."
Endurance is hard.
I also need to just keep getting it right, not giving in to what my flesh wants (that is, what's easy).
We're still busy working on all the issues related to the decision on rehabbing MoHo. Sunday evening I walked up Baker Rd. and talked to Todd who has done construction for much of his adult life, including some work on old mobile homes (he's owned a couple). He schooled me! Turns out they don't put headers over windows or doors, something that can make it easier or harder to put in new, depending on the changes you make to size or shape. But I came home encouraged that he thinks the specifics of my plan are basically sound.
Today the owner of Midgley's the best wood stove store in Eugene, came out to look at our setup and give us an estimate for installing a new, much more efficient and smaller stove. He's going to email me that estimate and the dimensions I need for building the hearth pad and heat shield that goes against the walls.
Friday a plumber from Baxter's Plumbing is coming out to give us an estimate for moving the laundry plumbing and the bathroom toilet plumbing over to what would become their new location.
Yesterday we went to Lowe's to look at washers and dryers. Turns out they have a clearance selection in the back of the store with display models, seconds (very minor flaws), and returns, and they're sold at prices up to 45% off. The dept. manager discouraged us from buying a return, but pointed out a pretty upscale washer missing some sheet metal screws in back that was cheaper than budget models being sold in the appliance section 40' away.
But wait! There's more!
When they get too many machines in the clearance section the store manager (randomly) decides to have a sale and knocks another 25% off the price. These sales aren't announced, typically start Friday night or Saturday morning, and require that you buy them and take them. No delivery, no holding it for you; pay your money take your machine.
So now we're calling every Saturday morning to see if they're having that sale (the mgr's recommendation to us). I'll be measuring the Kia today to see if a 27" wide wash machine will fit in the back. If not Pam will stand out in the parking lot while I go get a U-Haul trailer. Or I'll buy a hand truck and set out on foot for Elmira.
Read an article today: "What was the greatest single year in automotive history?" It was certainly pre-1972 when the feds decided we were all horrible idiots who were a danger to ourselves and others, and came up with things like things like hideous looking 5 mph bumpers, smog pumps, and hp restrictions.
I'd be inclined to say somewhere in the mid-60's. Styling, performance, features. You could look at any car from a distance and identify it (not the uniform boxes we have now), real chrome, interesting and varied interiors....
Sundae is due one week from today, but realistically it will be sometime the second half of next week.
I got a lot done today but I'm dying tonight. I'm going to bed.
