"Never fight an inanimate object." - PJ O'Rourke

The turnout for last night's hymn sing and pie social exceeded everyone's expectations. I think the pastor was flabbergasted because he feared it would be a dud. The room seats 100 people and it was SRO.
There were dozens of pies and I brought about half of mine home. I was glad because I wanted to see how it tasted. The apples were a bit soft but the taste was good. Each time I'm learning and getting better. This time I rolled the top crust a lot thinner so it dropped with the apples as they cooked down. I added a tablespoon of lemon juice to give the otherwise too-sweet apples some tartness and dressed the edge using a fork. Progress.

Got a break in the rain this afternoon and did 5 miles. I sure don't feel like I've got any juice in my runs, but doing them whether I feel good or not is the way to get to the point where I've got juice and feel good. I'll try to get another run in tomorrow so the break while I'm gone to Seattle doesn't totally mess up the week.

The big news here is that Bol Bol has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Oregon Ducks next year. He's a five star center, considered the best H.S. prospect in the nation at that position, and...
the son of Manute Bol.
Pretty special.

I liked Charlie Rose, especially his PBS show.
Idiot.

We record Poldark to watch when it's more convenient that the late Sunday night airing it gets on our local PBS station. I'm pretty sure Pam might decline the Rapture if Christ were so foolish as to come when we're watching it.

We do the same with Shetland. Close captioning is essential, but well worth it. The scenery is stunning, the characters powerful, and the thick brogue delicious. Tonight we watched the fifth and final episode in a series within the series. We have to stop the tape occasionally to figure out what's going on because the plot lines get complicated, but we're always sad to see the episode end.

The Greeks had a thing, at least in their plays. The winner in a struggle with his enemy would bring the vanquished man's loved ones in and brutally murder them in front of him. Then he'd put that poor guy's eyes out so that the last thing he ever saw was his wife and children murdered.
Does it work like that? Would the vision be any more lasting or intense because it was the last thing he saw?

I talked at church yesterday with one of the interns on staff. Brett says she has serious graphic arts skills and is going to do a book cover design for me. I had an idea, she thinks it will work, and is going to send me a proof soon. I'm very eager to see it! Meanwhile I'm learning more about self publishing. Today I had a conversation with a librarian about ISBN numbers and when you need a new one. If a book gets translated and printed in another language does that publication require a separate ISBN? "Not if the content is the same. That number allows the book to be identified in the international tracking system, so a book in a different language would lead back to the original."
Alrighty then!
