From older brother, Scott. I've done the top three, don't have the bottom one,
and have often wished I did.
Today was the five mile route. I did it last Thursday in 52 flat, so my goal was to beat that time.
Clocked it at 48:52.
It's the new shoes.
That pace, if I could keep it up for another 1.2 miles, would give me a 10k under 60 minutes. I could do that. And the race isn't until 11/16.
Busy day that started about 4 a.m.
The first task is always getting a fire going in the wood stove followed by the French press and hot coffee.
I made cardamom toast while I ate b'fast (oatmeal w/raisons) and then did all the dishes so that everything looked spiffy when Pam came out at 7:00
From there to the coffee shop to work on the manuscript. I've got some balance problems, with some chapters much longer than others. I need to fix that but I haven't decided exactly how.
Home just as Pam was headed into town to do the laundry. I went to work cleaning out two goat barns (OK, one's more shed than barn) and one chicken coop. That's a crazy job because both the goats and chickens are absolutely certain that whatever is going on promises exciting opportunities for...something. AJ and Burrito especially get worked up, want to be right in the middle of it, and see a wheelbarrow as a great opportunity for jumping in and out. Do they care of the loaded wheelbarrow tips over and spills all the dirty straw onto the ground? Nope!
Lunch and then the aforementioned run. Home to stack firewood on the deck.
When I cut all this wood I got some of it too long, thinking I wanted 18" pieces instead of 16".
That, and I got some of them even longer than 18".
So tomorrow afternoon after we get back from town (Pam to women's Bible study, me to work at Starbucks) she'll put one piece at a time into the cradle I made and I'll cut off the extra length. Then I'll stack it in the wood shed and should get it filled up with what we'll trim.
Feed the animals, eat dinner, and then watched a movie.
Months ago we got free HBO for a weekend and I recorded "The Woman In Gold." Helen Mirren.
E X C E L L E N T !!
True story about a woman who goes to court against the Austrian govt. to recover a painting stolen from her family by the Nazis.
We both loved it, never mind the educational value.
Still haven't heard back from my readers.
Now it's time for bed.

When I trained for marathons I would phase in new shoes the last 3 weeks of training. I swear they made me faster. Even if it was a placebo effect - it was a confidence booster. I also learned the bard way to buy long run shoes a half size too big. I'll miss those toe nails.
I ordered these Brooks from REI Garage in 10.5, the same size as my old ones. So far so good, and I think they're a bit longer than my old Nikes. Mostly, I don't get stabbed on the bottom of my foot when I run on the gravel portion of our road. There's some actual cushion on the bottom. And my foot is stable.
I've already lost the toenail. That was fun.
