"Age is a matter of feeling, not of years." - Washington Irving
We've had surprisingly heavy snow off and on all day with bright sun in between. A high of 38 felt more like Michigan than western Oregon. It wasn't an ideal day to have trouble getting the fire going. Mid-50s inside.
I talked to a lady at church this morning who has a '67 Mustang coup that she rec'd from her aunt's estate. It's a 289 with an automatic and was thoroughly restored 10 years ago. Alas, she talked about how emotionally attached to it she is. She and her aunt were very close, took some trips together in the car, and now it gets pampered.
So I didn't say "If you ever decide to sell it...."
I don't know which is worse, that the Russians tried to influence our election by posting on social media or that Americans are basing their election decisions based on Facebook posts.
Pam and I have been having an on-again/off-again conversation the last couple of days that started when she was told by an acquaintance that their marriage isn't going real well. That got us talking about why some marriages are troubled.
We started by theorizing that selfishness is the root cause of marital conflict. If both partners would set aside their own desires in preference for the other's - problems solved.
But then we thought about other possibilities.
Some couples are just so different that it's like oil and water. We talked about marriages in which one loves to be physically active and is adventurous while the other is a home body that prefers a good book. One is more about thoughts and intellectual pursuits while the other is a big heart walking around on two legs. One watches Meet the Press while the other prefers American Idol.
Then we realized that all pretty much describes us, and we've had fun for the better part of 47 years.
The ultimate oil and water marriage is the believer and the unbeliever. That one is gonna be trouble, guaranteed. I've seen it too many times.
Assault rifles account for 2% of the gun deaths in the U.S. each year (here). Over 80% of gun deaths come as a result of a handgun.
Banning assault rifles is a feel-good move that will make almost no difference on the number of gun deaths.
The problem is people, not weapons.
