"It ain't the heat, it's the humility." - Yogi Berra
Pam's gone another five days. It's good for her to be there and the right thing for her (us) to do, just as it is for me to go the Seattle to be with my mom. In both cases it helps a parent who needs that at this stage of their life. It was good and right for me to spend a month in Eastport and to go to Brazil for two weeks in June. But I'm sure not enjoying being apart this much.
"I will make a helper fit for him."
The bathroom's jalousie window (horizontal panes and a crank to open them, aka awning window) is a FAIL. I replaced the broken crank with the closest match I could find but it isn't good. And that style window doesn't close tightly. So I bought a vinyl replacement window, a single hung (only the bottom sash opens) that will fit in that 14" x 40" opening.
Because only the bottom sash opens it won't do much for clearing out the humidity that builds up when we shower and, in damp Oregon, creates a mold problem on the walls. So I got a bathroom vent fan via a special order from Lowe's. Unlike normal bathroom fans that vent through the ceiling and roof this vents horizontally out the wall.
In order to be most effective it needs to be as close to the ceiling as possible where the steam and mold are the worst. In most situations that wouldn't be a problem; install it right up against the ceiling. But in a 40-year old MoHo you can't do that. There is NO attic space and (if I understand correctly) there's a horizontal 2x6 running along the top of the wall the length of MoHo. Or is it a 2x8? Or....? And I need to know that before I cut a hole in the wall. I need to make my cut below that horizontal piece and ideally right up against it.
The safe thing would be to put the top of the fan hole even with the top of the window. Any horizontal framing piece is at least that high.
Except this fan is big enough that putting it at that elevation doesn't clear the medicine cabinet.
Hmmmm.

I wrote the above before heading to Starbucks this morning. When I got there I spent 90 minutes working on the sessions I'll do in Brazil. Then off to church for a good sermon taken from Israel's demand to Samuel (ultimately to God) that they get a king.
Home for lunch (hot dogs, well within my capabilities), the preacher's nap, the gym, and then some work outside.
I can feel fitness coming back. I think in another two or three years I should be back to where I was when we moved here.
Now it's time to heat up the last of the dinners Pam left for me in the freezer. That raises the question of what I do for the five dinners between this one and her return. Hmmm.
