Yesterday I heard Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus" for the first time in years. I'd forgotten how absolutely beautiful it is. Goodness!
I wrote about the rough finish on Sally's roof because of the dust that blew into the wet paint. Ah, life in the woods on a windy summer day.
Yesterday afternoon I wet sanded with 500 grit paper. The norm for wet sanding a car is to start with 1000 and work up to 2000 but I wanted to knock this down as efficiently as possible. When I'd done that there were a few places where I'd gone through to primer in addition to sanding off the gloss in this paint. No problem; I followed with another coat.
The paint comes out of the can very thick. It barely pours. So it gets thinned with about a 50% mix of Mineral Spirits until it's about the consistency of whole milk. I went just a bit thinner than that to get good flow.
Boom!
It looks so good I don't think I'm going to do any additional wet sanding or buffing lest I mess things up. I'll have to put another coat or two on the spots where the primer appeared but that's no big deal.
Lessons:
- Sand the primer more (finer grits in progression)
- Close up Barnette as soon as I've painted to keep the breeze and dust from blowing through.
- Use a thinner mix to get good flow. As thin as I can get it and not have runs.
I'm suddenly feeling a bit more optimistic about what will be my final results.
I dropped Pam at the airport a little after 5 a.m. for her 7:00 flight. She'll arrive in Grand Rapids late afternoon after a stop in Denver that's just long enough to get from the first gate to the next.
I have ambitious plans while she's gone - big progress on Sally, some interior window trim up and painted, the truck sold (D.V.), and several batches of cookies baked and in the freezer. That way when my class starts back up in the fall I can just take them out of the freezer.
And it's an F1 race weekend so there will be qualifying and the race to watch.
And maybe, just maybe, some kids born. Good grief.
The world just ain't right when Pam's gone.
