I spent the morning making those window cornices at the client's house. I had cut most of the pieces to size based on measurements I took, but some of it needed to be cut there to more precisely match angles and lengths. After that was done I assembled them. It's a bay window and she wanted a continuous cornice across all three. The result is a cornice box that has a 7' center section and a 52" wing at a 45 degree angle on either side. She's going to cover them with batting and fabric and then I'll go back and install them, probably a week from now. Getting that puppy 9' up in the air and screwed to the ceiling is going to be a challenge! I'll need help, so I'm hoping her husband is reasonably handy.
I stopped by Burger King on the way home. I'd forgotten just how easily a Whopper slides down.
Mmmmmm!
Do you ever get to feeling so whooped it's almost like you've been drugged? That's the way I felt when I got home. I sat in the chair thinking about all the things that I could do, should do, and couldn't work up the energy to do anything but fall soundly asleep. When I dozed off Tiger was 8 under and when I woke up he was 11 under. How can anyone be that dominant in a sport? He's eight strokes ahead of the second place guy with one round left to play. And this is his first tournament of the year, a warm-up for him.
I got up this morning with grand plans for taking a long bike ride after the morning's work. The high forecast for today was 70 degrees and sunny, and it doesn't get much better than that. My nap didn't revive me anywhere near realizing that goal, so I decided to compromise slightly and take the other bike, the one that goes VROOOOM! if you twist your right wrist just slightly. I headed north on roads I've never ridden before, out into the hills along gently winding roads, and passed with efficiency the two or three vehicles I came across. Adrenalin is a wonderful elixir, the perfect antidote to lethargy.
I'm pumped about tomorrow. I like what I've put together from Genesis 14 and anxious to share it. This is an odd section, full of tongue-twisting names and seemingly unrelated events. But an understanding of the cultural background followed by a solid dose of good old fashioned Bible study and the passage opens up to reveal some really powerful stuff. I'm praying that God will help me communicate effectively what I've come to believe is the reason God put this narrative in the Bible, the lesson he wants us to learn. The army men should help.
Second hour we'll continue to discuss the kind of church Pathway Bible Church will be. This week the focus will be on CEA's (Church Educational Agencies) and outreach styles. Both of these mark key distinctions between Pathway and the vast majority of other churches in the west valley. Re. the second, note the word, "outreach." Believers worship and serve each other at church, then go out to serve as salt and light in the world, communicating in actions and words God's grace.
I think I can reconstruct the dynamics that turned many 21st century churches into evangelistic enterprises, with "worship" services geared to unbelievers, but that is clearly not what God designed as laid out in the NT. And one of the unintended consequences is churches full of malnourished believers, going unfed because sermons are designed to communicate to the inquirer.
I think I've written before about a pastor friend of mine, now with the Lord, who wanted to commission a painting. An older shepherd would be standing next to a younger shepherd as they looked out over the latter's weak and emaciated sheep. The older says to the younger, "Maybe you should try feeding them."
Hey, you want to join the discussion? Join us at 9:30 tomorrow - or any Sunday morning! We'd love to have you!
