I will always cherish the original misconceptions I had about you.

Phyllis remains inexplicably single.

I've been running in a cheap pair of athletic shoes I got at a discount store a year ago, the same shoes I use for everyday wear and for work. I decided that with my mileage increasing it was time to get some real running shoes, but I'm pretty cheap and those shoes aren't. I was flipping through our AAA magazine yesterday morning and in their "special deals" section I noticed that members get an additional 40% off purchases at any Reebok outlet store, where stuff is already discounted. We have one about 15 miles from our house so I was on the bike and headed there straightaway. Got a nice pair for $41! So if you're a AAA member and looking for shoes and/or clothing go online to see if there's a Reebok outlet nearby. Note: you'll have to mention the AAA deal; no signs. And I don't remember how long the discount lasts.

I'm going to try out those shoes this Saturday. Aubri and I are planning on running a 5k near their house. I'll use it as a training run to help me learn pacing over a precisely measured distance.

I don't feel the least bit deprived for having missed all the election coverage last night. I rather enjoyed the quiet. Today I've been taking my inner pulse, checking my reaction to an Obama victory. Part of me is disappointed and concerned that our next President favors abortion in almost all circumstances and seems to have a troublesome economic perspective. I worry about Supreme Court nominations and the direction our relationships with hostile nations will take.
But there's one thing in this outcome that pleases me. In about two months the man standing behind the Presidential Seal will be a man of color. I really like what that says about our country - what it does for our image of ourselves and the message it sends to other countries. A case could be made that we're late getting to this point, but we're here now and this particular change is permanent.

I'm not sure I should admit this publically, but we watch Boston Legal. It's by no means my favorite show, but the reruns on cable provide an alternative to inane reality shows. (Sorry. Just my perspective.) I'm also not a William Shatner fan, but don't get me started on Star Trek.
That said, the final scene of each episode with Shatner and James Spader sitting on the balcony smoking thier cigars and having weird conversations is sometimes the best part of the show. Shatner plays a strange old man who used to be a famous and powerful attorney but is now in the early stages of Alzheimer's with erratic behavior. In this last scene he is often given profound lines that are surprising for being so inconsistent with his role.

A couple of weeks ago he said, "Sometimes I wish I'd never been great. I wouldn't miss it now."
Is it better to live a life of unmitigated mediocrity than meet with some success and then lose it?

Monday (reruns) he asked Spader's character, "Are you having fun in life?"
Discuss.

That photo is hilarious. I’ve never been able to understand the athletic shoes craze.
