I hate having to clean the fairies out of the lawn mower.

Every Target I've ever been to has the "IN" doors on the left and the "EXIT" doors on the right. That is opposite every other context in which traffic - foot or motorized - moves. I think they did it that way because the exit doors are thus closest to the cash registers, but it is so counterintuitive that you can almost always see someone who has to back up. move over and try it again.

I stopped at a gas station on the way home to fill up and put air in Gerta's spare. Like virtually all gas stations this one charges for air...75 cents for three minutes of air. But this is the first time I've seen one of those machines that takes credit and debit cards. There's something wrong with that picture.

Classic VW's have the spare located way up front, right behind the front hood. It sits in a well that puts it at an angle roughly equivalent to the slope of the hood.
When I got Gerta the spare was flat, which is why I stopped to put air in it this afternoon. But once it had 32 psi the hood lid wouldn't close. So I either have to take some air out of the tire or get a smaller tire for the spare. Tire sizes were very different back in the 60's because bias ply tires were the norm instead of the radials of today. Also, because VW's were German they were designed for metric-sized tires. I think those factors account for the problem.
It's no big deal, really, since I don't have a jack or a tire iron yet.

I worked on Gerta a bit today. The interior panel of the passenger door needed some attention so I took it off to re-glue the vinyl onto the fiber board backing piece. And I discovered, again, that someone did work poorly. These are not the original panels, but are good reproductions. Unfortunately, the person who installed them used a clip about every second or third hole, and as a result the panel doesn't sit snugly. Also, he/she cross-threaded the small screw that holds the door latch in place. The next time I take that panel off (to install new window channel lining) I'm going to have to come up with a way around that.

I also worked on a 48" round oak table top. An elderly lady up the street for whom I did some work last summer asked if I would re-finish it. So I got half of it stripped this afternoon.

I'm going to drive Gerta into church tomorrow morning and leave right afterward for the Copperstate VW show about 5 miles away from where we meet. I'm hoping to learn a lot, like why the hood won't close, what to do about a door lock so worn out the key doesn't work, and if there's a good local place to get bumpers re-chromed.

Church will be challenging tomorrow. We have two families out of town for the weekend and in a congregation our size that makes for a noticeable impact. No problem there, though, because God is sovereign and worship doesn't require a quorum.
The challenge is the sermon which will work through 1 Cor. 5. Contrary to common opinion this is not a chapter about church discipline. The issue here doesn't focus on the individual living in gross immorality, but on the church's decline because he remains in their midst.
What doofus thought preaching through 1 Cor. was a good idea? Didn't he realize that this center section is one tough topic after another? Good grief.

I really don't understand this stimulus plan. The party that said, "We inherited the worst deficit in American history" has just passed what they proudly proclaim is the largest funding bill of American history. We're going to spend just shy of a trillion dollars we don't have to jump start an economy that went into a nose dive because of the bogus use of credit - money people didn't have and never would have.
I do know that I am going to be REALLY ticked if, after buying a house we could afford and making our mortgage payment every month, I watch people who did neither get bailed out with government (read: MY) money!

It's not even 7:00 yet. Pam won't be home for another hour. But I'm drifting off even as I type this. I got a lot done today but I'm paying the price now! Early to bed tonight for a full day tomorrow.
