The White Sox gave up 20 runs in a loss to the Twins today. Think they need some pitching? Yeah, but if you were a very good pitcher about to be traded (Jake Peavy) would you want to join the Sox??
If you swing at a third-strike pitch that also hits you, are you out or do you get first base?
I hate money. There will be no money in heaven because there are only good things in heaven and I can't think of a single good thing about money. Necessary, but not good.
We were told Greyhounds are naturally flatulent. As much as I enjoy a dog that wants to sleep nearby in my office as I work, that particular characteristic is not so endearing. This is especially true at a time of year in Phoenix when open windows are out of the question.
For whatever reason my cycling is going very well the last couple of weeks. I'm doing longer distances without proportionate struggle and what were my longer rides are now speed drills. Today I did 15 miles at an average speed of 18.8 mph, and for an old man that's a pretty good clip for an open course ride that includes traffic lights.
I've also started going back to the gym. My arthritis has been giving me trouble lately so I decided to be proactive, including getting back into the pool. I've gone back to the beginning of the Total Immersion system because I do think it makes the most sense. If you're not familiar with it, you start on your back. The early drills are all done on your back and until you've mastered certain techniques you do not swim stomach-down. So I'm doing lap after lap staring up into the sky. My problem is that there are no lane markers up there and I seem incapable of swimming in a straight line. It's a bit embarrassing to zig-zag across a 6' wide lane.
Statism redux
The govt. gave $6B to GMAC as part of the TARP program. Today they announced that GMAC will receive another $7.5B in govt. money. I didn't realize that the Feds shut down Chrysler's financing arm and made GMAC Chrysler's financing agency.
Look what showed up today!
These are what they call check disks - proofs. We have a few technical issues to work out but this is what they'll look like when they're done. Feels good. Lots of work yet to be done in the next 30 days - brochures, order forms, duplicating, etc. - but this makes it feel closer.
I do not know which one is Kris and which one is the other guy - whatever his name is. I didn't watch a single minute of the series and don't feel the least bit deprived.
I'm increasingly dissatisfied with the NIV.
In 1 Cor. 10:16 the NIV reads, "...the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks...." In 11:24 it reads, "and when he had given thanks...." Both passages have to do with communion.
The Greek word for thanks is eucharistos and it appears in 11:24. It does NOT appear in 10:16, where instead Paul uses the word eulogios, which almost everywhere else is correctly translated "blessing." Accordingly, virtually every other version translates 10:16 as "the cup of blessing which we bless."
Why did the NIV use thanks instead of blessing in 10:16? It's not a tricky passage, the two words are very common in the NT and their proper translation straightforward.
All things being equal I'd prefer the NASB. But it is a little more wooden, stilted in its wording. The continuum between accuracy and readability is the classic issue in choosing a Bible translation. But I'm finding too many cases where the NIV errs where there's no advantage re. readability.
The downside to the additional exercise I'm getting is an increased appetite. I've had dinner and I don't think it made a dent. So I'm going on the prowl for more FOOD. And then I have to settle down to a serious inspection of these two CD's so any and all problems are identified before they proceed to the next step - creating the masters for duplication. I think Mark expects me to have that review done by morning.
Good thing I can do it and watch the Lakers beat the Nuggets at the same time.
