Click to enlarge if you're having trouble reading the sign. The Colorado Institute of Technology called again this morning (see last night’s post). Pam was right here, but suspecting it was them I answered the phone. I told the lady she passed away last week.
“I’m sorry sir. Have a nice day.” (click)
Cold!
This morning I did my last hard workout before the race next Thursday. I did a race distance and race pace run and then went directly into the ride. I was pushing both to see what I am capable of. My run was right on target and the transition went smoothly, but the ride was tough. Because of road construction in our area the only route available is an out-and-back, with the first six miles up a modest but steady grade. I was trying to make up for a doggy first half by burying my head and hammering back down the hill. I never got a clear look at what I think was a fist-size rock, and went right over the top of it. Twenty five yards later I had a flat rear tire. Grrrrr.
By the time I had it fixed my thighs had locked up and did not want to go round and round again.
The quads didn’t loosen up as the afternoon wore on. In fact, I’m pretty sore. This does not fill me with confidence for Thursday morning. Instead, I’m wishing I had trained harder.
I’ll go for a swim tomorrow afternoon and maybe a little jog on Monday. Other than that I’ll skip any exercise. Nothing I would do at this point will increase my fitness enough to make a difference, and resting will have me fresh for Thursday morning. For whatever fresh is worth.
We got two more phone calls today. I asked the second lady where she got Pam’s name from. She said she was part of a quality control system checking to make sure we wanted to be contacted. Uhmmm, NO! “OK, I”ll make sure your name and number are removed.” Forgive me if I’m not convinced.
There’s more, but it’s late, it’s Saturday night and tomorrow morning is going to require that I be particularly rested and alert. Matt normally leads our singing but he’s gone tomorrow so I’m up. And we’re having communion together, adding another opportunity to get my signals crossed and goof something up. I’ve had my PT&J and a large, frosted cinnamon roll, so I’m off to bed.
G’night.
