Today (1/20) is National Penguin Day, so dance like a penguin. If you're too late don't worry. The 21st is Squirrel Appreciation Day and National Hugging Day. So find a squirrel and give him a hug.
This is a fun site to play around with:
Utah in 360 degrees
My favorite is the cathedral. Check out the ceiling.
Chicken and broccoli for dinner tonight.
Groundhog Day.
I was up early and watched some of the Australian Open. Hard not to root for Kim Clijsters, one of the nicest women on the tour, a new mom, a very hard worker and someone who plays without any of the flashiness or grunting so common these days.
Our third major storm hits here late tonight or early tomorrow morning. If we get the full brunt of it we may get more rain in 36 hours than we got in all of last year. We will certainly exceed that amount by week's end.
When it rains here to any significant degree our streets quickly flood. The desert doesn't absorb water; it runs off as though it were one great paved parking lot. Kind of cool to see unless you get stuck somewhere. Then there are the macho idiots in their Hummers or jacked up 4x4's who think they'll drive through a flooded wash only to find out how powerful rushing water can be. Which is why Arizona has a "stupid motorist" law. They pay for their rescue.
That VW Bus went earlier tonight and brought $36,300.
The victory of Scott Brown in the Mass. senate race has lots of Republicans feeling very good about their party and its future prospects. I'm pleased with the outcome because of the balance it restores in the Senate as well as the values on policies I expect Brown to support. But I'm troubled by the reaction I'm seeing from some on Facebook. Several have thanked God for giving Brown the victory.
I wonder if they would have thanked God for a Coakley victory, had that been the outcome.
Daniel 4 and Romans 13 both make it clear that God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men, gives them to whomever he wills, and that anyone in a position of authority is God's specific choice. If Coakley had won she would have been God's choice and we should give thanks.
How can we get rid of this very dangerous "us vs. them" thinking that equates Republicans with God and his will while Democrats are of Satan. Hey, isn't that the implication?!
I knew that Haiti was the western half of the island and the Dominican Republic was the eastern half. I didn't know the island is officially known as Hispaniola until an NPR program this morning. I also didn't know that French is the language of Haiti but Spanish the language of the D.R. And while Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere while the D.R. is a net exporting country with a very stable economy. How does that happen?
Dan & Mary Sue Reed, missionaries to Bolivia, will be at Pathway this Sunday, which means I don't have sermon and lesson prep to do. So the plan is to make progress on the cabinet doors tomorrow after a 2-week hiatus. Installed by the weekend?

I think Brown's election may save the Democratic party from itself. His presence in the Senate will enable many moderates to use him as a foil against some of the hardcore in their party while satisfying their more reasonable constituents at home. I think moderation in our major political parties is mostly a good thing and applaud whenever it occurs.

Scary how much we think alike - I was trying to think of a tactful way to say the same thing about facebook blasts on my blast. Shouldn't we always thank God for our leaders - since he provides them all in His wisdom? And, did He fail us in 2009 when he gave the democrats a majority?
