Mystery solved! I put a post about Gerta’s leak on the VW forum and one guy suggested the problem might be a crushed seal. There are about 12 different pieces to the assembly that go on the spindle, ending with the brake drum at the outside. Both the manual and the Bug Me video I have say to put them on in order, working from the inside out. This guy says that part #8 (spacer) should be placed in part #10 (seal housing, already holding #9, the seal), and then that assembly slid onto the spindle. Otherwise the seal can get pinched and crushed.
I took it apart this afternoon and, sure enough, the seal is crushed.
The good news: I don’t feel like a screw-up. I followed directions assuming they were good. But this illustrates why that forum is so valuable, even if after the fact. The collected wisdom of guys who have done almost everything on a Bug at least once is invaluable.
The bad news: dear Gerta sits dripping tranny oil out the left side rear until the new seal just ordered arrives from So. Cal - a $4 part plus $10 shipping. Should be here by Saturday.
Al passed on his morning 2 cups of food again. I’ve checked and he doesn’t seem to be in any pain. His belly isn’t tender and his “output,” limited as it is with only one meal a day, is normal.
Maybe he’s lovesick. But just in case it’s something more serious I made an appt. at the vet for tomorrow morning.
I must have sounded really cold, but I told them Al was a dog, a pet, not a family member. So we had a limit to what we’d spend on him. “Just want you to know going in that we have a budget for a pet.” He said he would write that on the chart.
So, what did he write?
“Cold, heartless owner”??
But it’s all about stewardship. We cannot justify spending significant amounts of money on an animal, particularly a pet. We talked about this when Fred & Karen were here because Al was just beginning to show signs of dis-ease. We agreed that Americans spend stupid money on pets - $41 billion per year (yes, that’s billion, with a B) as reported in 2007. And of course they look at it from the perspective of life in Kipaka where nobody would think of owning a pet. Some of them don’t have enough to feed their kids, so a dog that doesn’t contribute anything....
We’re beginning a new sermon series Sunday and I’m getting eager to begin. I hope it comes out like it’s going in. D.V.
I’m pulling for Phil. The crowd will be, too.
Lakers/Celtics? Either way. Just want a good game.
Wimbledon begins this weekend. Federer, please.
Written prayers?
I think so, for some specific situations.
Many of the prayers in the OT certainly look to be composed, not extemporaneous. Hannah’s prayer in First Samuel, Daniel’s prayer of repentance on behalf of the nation, the Psalms....
The Puritans wrote out prayers. (See Valley of Vision) Powerful stuff.
The time that writing requires allows for conciseness, precision, potency.
So for some public venues, but perhaps even more for private devotion, written prayers seem not just valid, but valuable.
