You may have heard about our county sheriff, an old guy named Joe Arapaio. He's gained some national attention over the years. Many locals love him for his tough guy image, his promises to catch all the bad guys, and things like making prisoners wear pink boxer shorts, eat PB&J's, and live in his "tent city" with conditions that resemble a refugee camp.
Others here, including almost everybody else in county govt., other law enforcement officials and much of the local press use words like egomaniac, demigod and publicity hound to describe him. He definitely gets a check in the box, "does not play well with others."
Out here in Sun City, where Republicans outnumber Democrats 99 to 1, the median age is 75 and paranoia is considered life skill, we're getting the same campaign posters every other U.S. community is seeing, but with one interesting difference. Many of the posters with the small elephant logo also have, in very large letters, "Endorsed by Sheriff Joe Arapaio."
I appreciate that line of text. It tells me which candidates to avoid.
