A young guy named Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open today. If I hadn’t spent almost 20 years in Grand Rapids, new world home of all things Dutch, I would have no idea how to pronounce his very Dutch name. But Louis, as it turns out, is from South Africa, another country with a very large Dutch population. Which is why the “cover picture” on ESPN.com and SportsIllustrated.com is so cool. There’s Oosthuizen shaking hands with his caddy, a Black South African. And if you saw the end of the tournament on TV you know that they did much more than shake hands; they heartily embraced each other...twice. Within my lifetime that would have been unthinkable - both that a Black South African would caddy at Royal Saint Andrews and that he would be so warmly embraced by his white countryman. Yeah, I like that scene a lot.
BTW, Louis’ nickname is Shrek. Like that animated movie star, Oosthuizen has a gap between his front teeth, which is why his friends stuck him with that tag. But he’s cool with it and enjoys the jab.
We still have a few people out for summer vacations but Pathway was much closer to its normal compliment this morning. The preacher finds that a much easier room to work.
The Wigwam was also busy with some kind of weekend bash sponsored by a local country music station - KMLE, which calls itself Camel Country Radio. Suffice it to say some of the tag lines they use on their banners, specifically those that refer to a camel’s most distinguishable physical feature, are inconsistent with the themes of a church service. And this morning’s feature was a “Sunday Mass Ingestion,” a double entendre that apparently referred to an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.
It was also too hot in our meeting room. I don’t know if their AC was set improperly or if it just can’t keep up with this weather. As I type this it’s 107 degrees with a dew point of 62 degrees, for a “feels like” temp of 110. This is monsoon season, when it is definitely NOT a dry heat. And yes, there’s a very noticeable difference.

I’m liking the looks of this:
Four Wheel Bike
You buy his plans and build it yourself. Both people pedal, which means both people get exercise without the balance issues (or expense) of a tandem bicycle. It could also double as a golf cart. Pam likes the idea too. So I may start looking to scavenge the bicycle parts necessary for the wheels and shifting mechanism. I need to find one of those guys who has 100 bicycles in his yard that he sells for dirt cheap.
Full schedule tomorrow. Because I’m gone Tuesday through Saturday for the conference in Grand Rapids I need to get lots done before leaving. And I haven’t been on my bike since last Wednesday, so the day will begin with a vigorous ride of 25-30 miles, weather permitting. Pam will be home soon after having taken the grandkids to see Despicable Me so I won’t get much done tonight. Maybe after they go to bed. Then again, on a Sunday night our bedtimes are almost the same.

We have a quadcycle at camp--though it's not as nice as the one pictured. Still, it's fun. Oh, and there can still be some balance issues....
