"By working faithfully eight hours a day you may eventually get to be boss and work twelve hours a day." - Robert Frost

I'm back....sort of.

Jim arrived from Seattle a little after noon on Wednesday and after grabbing some lunch (In-N-Out) we relaxed until it was time to pick Pam up from work. A good dinner of pork tenderloin and trimmings (mmmmm) on the patio in the 75-degree temps prepared us for Thursday's hard work.

We arrived at Barrett-Jackson about 10 a.m. and left a little after 3:00. In between we looked at almost 1,400 cars and spent some time watching a few cross the block. No, I didn't get any pics; forgot my camera. Besides, two dimensions doesn't do them justice and you don't really care anyway. Suffice it to say we saw all types, including some customs that illustrated the axiom: "Not everything that can be done should be done." Did we see some I would accept if offered as a gift? Oh, yeah. And some that, while not my personal cup of tea, you have to respect as legit expressions of a particular genre.

Friday we went to Russo and Steele and did it all over again. A much smaller auction, we saw about 700 cars, but in a much more conducive environment. I learned a lot, including by peppering Jim with questions about British cars. He was into that segment of the market way back when we were in school together.

Some take-aways:

  • The market for pickup trucks from the 40's through the early 70's seems to be hot right now. Will it get hotter? I dunno, but if it does an astute individual might make himself a handsome profit by finding just the right example and doing a bit of restoration. Hmmmm.
  • Muscle cars have been hot for a few years but (thankfully) seem to be losing some of their allure.
  • The fascination with movie cars and "cartoon" customs seems to have died a timely death.
  • DeSoto's seem to be in demand, esp. those from the early 60's.
I dropped Jim at the airport late Friday afternoon and headed out to pick up Pam from work. In the 90 minutes it took me to do that and get home a miserable cold had settled in, and I was in bed before 8 p.m. So far today - two naps. Now the question is what condition I'll be in for tomorrow's responsibilities. I'll load up on decongestants on the assumption that crud running down my upper lip is worse than the befuddled brain that might result. We'll see.

In prep for tomorrow, for one of my sermon illustrations I went online and re-read the story portrayed in the movie, "Chariots of Fire." (Great movie you need to see if you haven't already.) That took me to the Wiki article on Eric Liddell. Impressive!

I saw this on Facebook. Made me smile. Some guy was asked to fill out a form for his 2-year old daughter given him by her daycare provider. The nonsense of some of their questions combined with his sarcasm to result in this. (click to enlarge)

Our new recliners are supposed to be delivered between 4:30 and 6:30 this evening. Eager to get them in place and see how they sleep.
