"In the Soviet Union capitalism triumphed over communism. In this country, capitalism triumphed over democracy." - Fran Lebowitz
I realized as I sat in my chair at 3 a.m. this morning that the last 12 days have been exhausting. Some of it was very good, some very difficult, but all of it fully engaged me. I enjoy the stimulation, but after almost two weeks of it I'm ready for my generally boring routine.
Which is why I spent some quality time with the truck today. This project goes in fits and starts, and I'm currently at a stage when small but significant tasks give me the feeling of real progress. Getting the under dash wiring all hooked up doesn't take long but represents a major step forward. Sanding the steering wheel goes slowly and takes more effort than the final product reflects.
I came home to a dead modem. It had been giving us sporadic trouble, and while I was in MI Pam had to reboot it several times. Yesterday when we got home from the airport...nothin'. I bought a new one, hooked it up, and then had to call Cox to register the thing so their computers could recognize it. (Yeah, I have no idea what that means, but the instructions said that's what had to happen.) While I was on the phone with the guy he said their records showed I was receiving X bps and he could upgrade us to 2X bps at no additional charge. "Do you want me to make that switch?"
What kind of a dumb question is that??
"No, I really like waiting for pages to load and watching that video wheel spin."
And had my modem not died would I have ever learned that I was receiving half the speed available?
Check out this interactive map to see how bad the drivers are in your state. (run your mouse over a state to see its stats.) It seems that wide open spaces, no ban on texting, and lots of cheap booze push AZ into downright dangerous territory.
Back to the wiring. I spent several hours today making those under-dash connections with mixed success. I've got one terminal that seems to be worn - or the wire clip messed up - and it won't stay connected. My ignition switch isn't stock because they don't make them anymore, so I'm trying to figure out how to wire it into the system. And I have four dash light sockets and only three holes in the back of the gauge cluster that take one. Hmmmm. But it's all going to wait until I'm fresh. Wrestling with it more now will only lead to bad words a pastor shouldn't be saying. Besides, at 4:30 it's 92 degrees, not a temp conducive to wrestling with wiring.
So, an early dinner and then in to a meeting.
Here we go.

I don't know if you would be interested in the fallout of this "meme" in regards to the response of the son of who I would say is the mentor to my spiritual trajectory. I feel sad for these wonderful parents who home schooled this kid only to see him turned into a militant liberal. His father was someone who showed me great grace in my idiotic know it all attitude fresh out of college. Take a look for yourself, hope this link works. I would be curious to know your input. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10153276028959674&id=781084673&comment_id=10153279085879674&offset=0&total_comments=34¬if_t=feed_comment
Interesting conversation, BJ. Yes, there are bad actors in law enforcement, as there are in any profession. But I want to see statistics that show the number of LEO engagements, the percentage of them that include inappropriate action by that LEO, and the percentage that result in negative consequences for the LEO. I think we can both guess where those numbers will fall.
